Help Needed for Best GPU Upgrade for 1440p Gaming ??

Hey everyone,

I am looking for some advice on upgrading my GPU to handle 1440p gaming with high settings:. I currently have an RTX 2060 and while it's been great for 1080p,.. I am starting to notice it struggling with newer titles at 1440p. I am aiming for smooth performance (ideally 60+ FPS) in games like Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield.
My system have CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X, RAM: 16 GB DDR4 and PSU: 650W

I am torn between upgrading to something like the RTX 4070 or going with AMD’s RX 7800 XT. Budget is around $600...., but I can stretch a bit if it’s really worth it.
Has anyone here made a similar upgrade recently: ?? How’s the performance been, especially with ray tracing; ?? Any potential bottlenecks with my current system: ?? Open to any recommendations or experiences you guys can share. I have also read this thread on Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/IndianGaming/comments/1e4ekz4/please_help_pick_a_gpu_for_1440p_gaming-cissp but couldn't get enough solution.

Thanks in advance !!

With Regards,

I'm in the same boat as you Derek as I've an RTX-2080 definitely showing its age.

I also play games like Cyberpunk, Metro, Control, etc., Ray Traced games; meaning Nvidia.

Issue is, there's all kinds of rumors right now about the 50 Series release specs and dates so imho, now is the worst time to purchase an Nvidia GPU.

Personally, I'd wait until those rumors firm up and either commit to a 50 series or enjoy a decent discount on a 40 series when the 50's release.

I upgraded from a 980 Ti which was struggling in some games to a 4070 Ti Super about 6 months ago. Great performance, frame rates in iRacing improved significantly, in fact, double. I have no issues in iRacing at all anymore as far as graphics. I can't speak to ray tracing. I haven't played any of the games you mentioned. Some of us tried Baldur's Gate when it came out but multiplayer was just awful, so got a refund. I did get Horizon Forbidden West for PC and gameplay on that was fantastic, great graphics. MB is X570 Aorus Master and CPU is AMD Ryzen 9 3900x 12 Core, 3800 Mhz, 32 GB RAM.

Upgrading to either the RTX 4070 or the AMD RX 7800 XT will provide a solid boost for 1440p gaming. Both cards can handle newer titles at high settings with 60+ FPS, but the RTX 4070 will have the edge in ray tracing performance, while the RX 7800 XT offers strong performance at a potentially better value, especially in rasterization-heavy games. Your Ryzen 7 3700X and 16 GB of RAM should be fine, but if you're pushing demanding games with high settings, your CPU might hold you back in certain scenarios. A 650W PSU is adequate for either of these GPUs, but ensure you have proper cooling. If ray tracing is important to you, go for the RTX 4070, but if you’re focused more on pure performance for 1440p, the RX 7800 XT is a great choice.
