Development begun on the next Witcher game

CDProjektRed and WitcherGame tweeted today the next installment of the beloved Witcher franchise is in early development.

Currently there’s no details about the game aside from CDProjekts decision to partner with Epic Games in using Unreal Engine 5 instead of RedEngine.

Currently there’s no details about the game aside from CDProjekts decision to partner with Epic Games in using Unreal Engine 5 instead of RedEngine.

Quoted from thewitcher.com“This is an exciting moment as we’re moving from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5, beginning a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games. It covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. We’ll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences.”

Some are legitimately concerned this could lead to exclusivity with Epic Games Store but apparently CDProjekt has stated this won’t be the case.

We’ll have to wait and see of course but given GOG exists to offer CDProjekt (and other games) as DRM free I suspect they’d not pen a deal to compete against themselves as an independent Publisher.

Of note, the medallion pictured in the screenshot is thought to be Witcher School of the Cat.

Witcher School of the Cat is a group of ragtag Witchers formed after a student mutiny against their former masters. Apparently they’re one of the few schools that train women and non-pureblood humans.

It’s been suggested this would open up the possibility to play as Ciri or perhaps a custom made character of our choosing.

Either way exciting news indeed.
