Bohemia released a new patch for ArmA 2.

Patch highlights are:

  • Multiplayer optimizations, security and server improvements
  • Overall stability was improved with numerous tweaks and fixes
  • Added new video options (Post-Process Anti-Aliasing, Alpha To Coverage)
  • Additional AI improvements and numerous bug fixes
  • Resolved issues with several training missions
  • Added a lot of new script commands for content makers
They also made a little reference to DayZ with this note:
Patch 1.62 brings a lot of fixes to multiplayer, which – aside for the largescale military battles – will also make zombie hunts much less prone to crashes and should improve server stability.
The full list of changes and fixes is located in the readme file that comes with the patch.

The patch can be downloaded here.

As noted in the changelist, you'll be getting some new video options with this patch.

One of these; Alpha To Coverage (ATOC) gives you the option to change the foliage/grass/trees that is being rendered. One option is to disable everything.

I haven't tried this setting yet, but i'm curious how this will work out in multiplayer games, DayZ for instance. Will you have an advantage when you disable this? Or will there be a server side setting which overrides your normal settings?

The option to disable long grass has always been there afaik, this sounds more like a tweak to allow more options between Off and Very High. ArmA doesn't render grass at distance anyway I believe so this shouldn't affect too much far away but close up may be another story.

ArmA has always had issues in this regard with all environmental cover like grass, bushes and trees, I think even rocks, rock walls and debris may be in this category. Even though the tree is there, the full image does not block AI view which is why you can get killed by AI without ever knowing they are there. The AI view block is extremely low poly and is never the full size or shape of the object it's attached to.

There was a project that worked pretty well to fix this issue but I think it was scrapped because I haven't seen anything of it in a while; maybe I'm just not looking close enough.

I don't think there will be a way to turn off trees and bushes though as they render as very low poly blobs when set to their lowest settings. This also sounds more like a tweak (a much needed tweak) to have trees and bushes scale properly at more distances.

...if you've ever just stood in place and zoomed into and away from a tree, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about.

If you update to this, has anyone tried connecting to our server? I don't have any kind of server update for this, so I am concerned it will lock out players that update. Feedback very much appreciated.

Soooo , you want me to update DayZ with the risk of not being able to play if i do so ......
I smell a trap !!

On a more serious note , DayZCommander still has 565server listed as 1.7.2.3 .
So that would mean that if you update , you wont be able to play on our server .

Well maybe not now, but perhaps at the end of your play time tonight? I'll get the patch back on by tomorrow if it doesn't work...probably! :icon_twisted:
