On 29th April Eagle Dynamics released the P51 beta, you get it, if you preorder the product from their website. On a Sunday, without any hint. Came as a complete surprise - just as I was digesting the CloD patch letdown.

Of course I just had to throw the 40 USD at them to get it right away. And another surprise: They have included the 'Frogfoot' as well - and have imbedded these planes in the new modular system called DCS: World.

Training missions to help you learn the important stuff and a campaign (to test if you learned well) are included for both planes.

I'll go and get DCS World! I just don't have the time to learn the P51 all over again so I'll save that one for the future. Good to know they've done a combined installation for them all though, surely it says they have a plan for the future.

The only thing that I know is, that Wags (the producer) stated DCS World is open for 3rd party developers. And we have a video that shows BF-109s on the tarmac ...

It will be interesting to see how it transpires. Maybe with the next 2 years, 1C and its combat sims will have its first real competitor for over a decade.

That all said IL2...ground vehicles...we might have a winner.

For all of you who want to know what the fuzz about ground looping, takeoff and landing accidents is all about, I can recommend this sim. The IL2 series is child's play compared to this.

After 2 hours of fooling around in this sim I can say: this is the most difficult prop sim I've ever flown. Getting off the ground in one piece and a contolled flight path feels like a big accomplishment. Keeping the bird on the runway after touchdown, too.

Plus:
- awesome sounds
- clickable cockpit with amazing attention to detail
- ricochets of the .50s on hard surfaces
- complex simulation of all aircraft systems like engine, fuel, gun sights, radio
- difficult to master flight dynamics

After a few hours of takeoff practice, I feel really comfortable now. But you have to concentrate: the tiniest error on the inputs and you are belly up.

Landing is a different matter, as this beast is so sensitive on the tarmac, that you have a hard time keeping it there. Keeping practicing that.

Dropping bombs and shooting rockets or the MGs at non moving ground targets and actually destroying things is a piece of cake. IL2 well prepared for that.

But more takeoff/landing practice is in order.

After a 2 week hiatus I flew it again today. Nothing short of spectacular! And botched the first 2 landings again - of course.
