I can't speak to how cartooney it looks but IMHO, none of these MMO's look true to life.
I was personally skeptical about it as well never playing an MMO in my entire life prior to GW2. In the beginning I created a Warrior Character and was quickly bored by it within the span of 1 hour.
I then changed to a role I'm not familiar at all with, a Ranger, a Female Ranger and have put in 40+ hours on this character now. She's not super tough so she fights more at range with a Bow and Arrow and has a pet at her side to help keep the enemies attention diverted while she delivers death at distance.
I can't say I'm a huge fan of crafting too much but it is part of the game and it does become satisfying when you create something new that is actually useful lol.
The scenery is extremely diverse and for a game of this scale, it really does look quite good. In fact, I'm completely surprised by how good it looks in some areas with nice little touches like snow falling in clumps from the trees now and then.
You can create up to 5 characters without upgrading your account so you have 5 chances to find a character/role you like which I think is plenty.
I think if you just consider what kind of play style you want to experience, the character creation comes quite easily and you may find yourself hundreds of hours into the game before you even know it.
Personally I would recommend this game to anyone.
