How to zero a scope?

Noticed that you can change your distance or something in the scope? Coming from a nation where the only people who have guns are airport police and your friendly local gang member I have no idea what this is or how to use it and wondered if any of you experienced players could explain it to me please?

Default button is V (switch fire mode)

If your scope is zeroed to 0m (default) and you want to hit a target 500m away, you have to aim above the target due to bullet drop. If you zero to 500m, you aim at the target dead center in your scope and will hit it, no aiming above it.
