iRacing: Life after Rookie

Getting out of Rookie Class in iRacing is surprisingly simple and happens exceptionally fast. Once into D-Class and later C-Class, a bunch of new racing options present themselves.

I fully intend to complete all 13 weeks of the Mazda Cup but after that I’ll likely never race it again.

It is with this in mind I ask what series of racing are you guys most interested in the higher license classes?

…oh and just so you know, this is where it starts getting expensive!

Personally, I joined iRacing to race the Cadillac CTS-V and will likely do so in next seasons Global Challenge unless there is enough interest around here to race the Ruf Cup (Carrera Cup rip-off). I’ve already picked up the Ruf and it’s one sweet car to race. While I didn’t purchase iRacing for the Ruf, I’m very glad I picked it up because one goal of mine is to race guys like Jimmy Broadbent and of course, my Mentor, wheeldamage.

I plan to breeze through D-Class License as well and linger in C-Class for a very long time even if I’m promoted to B-Class which I don’t think will take too long.

Ultimately though for me, I’d love to race all the following regularly:
  • Ruf
  • Cadillac CTS-V
  • MacLaren
  • Corvette

Lastly, little P and I have had the distinct pleasure of practicing with seasoned iRacers and it was a blast! I’ve been recording these sessions and may even start streaming them to Twitch to be uploaded to YouTube later.

If this seems like a better way to practice (which I believe it is), I’m going to pull in some guys from iRacing to our Teamspeak and hold “Practice Pals” Sessions here. There’s just no better way to practice because you’re racing people you can communicate with and constantly challenge each other on track.

I’ve even come up with a rough setup on how we’d run these sessions with whomever spins, crashes, etc., waiting in the Pits for the field to return and then MUST pull out and race in front. A 5 – 10 second head start will be afforded this/these individual(s) as their operating on cold tires that are not up to pressure yet.

This will give everyone the most racing experience possible because you’ll be forced to find new lines which often leads you to better lap times overall.

Thoughts on all the above?

That sounds really nice Duke!

Ofcourse if you'd race with me you'd have plenty of practice in overtaking anyway XD

I'm up for some tips in teamspeak anyway, as i don't think using the ingame voicechat for lessons will be apreciated by the general public XD

I've got no idea on what to do in higher clases yet, haven't looked inot that at all yet, but I do know I probably wo'nt be spending hundreds of bucks just to be able to do a certain series. I might want to buy one or 2 extra tracks though because there aren't that many if you take away the ovals...

Btw, with a bunch of ovals already in the pack I might want to give that a try sometime too..., might be fun for a change, and we'd all be rookies right? :p

Yes all great ideas! I will be completing the Mazda cup as well, I love the momentum style of these cars, but I also love the sheer power of the Cadillac and trying to tame it around a lap is a challenge, let alone a whole race :icon_eek:

I will be investing in new tracks and cars at some point, for now I'm enjoying the Mazda and yes I too would like to dabble in a bit of Oval racing at some point, although I'll be focusing on road racing as time goes on.

I'm just wondering whether I should set up a new account with the one year membership as it's 50% off and I'm not sure how long that'll last. At the moment I've got a three month sub as I used a code that gave you two months free, just so I could try it out and wouldn't have lost out on much if I didn't like it.

As it is I'm so impressed I would actually throw myself into this for the long haul, which I haven't done for anything in a loooong time. If you are going to be doing that too Duke et al, I'd look into doing that as I wouldn't want to get into this for a year then after that people move away from it. That's a lot of money to spend considering you don't actually own it, so if your sub runs out you can't use the sim.

I really think that what you get for the money is totally worth it, as long as you keep using it... but then I understand what you buy is always available to you when you re-suscribe, so that's good.

I purchased a Year Subscription off the bat because it represented very good value and something I was sure would be a longer term investment.

Like you guys, I will dabble in Oval eventually as well but I joined strictly for Road Racing so I'm likely only to hop to Oval when I get bored of if you guys peer pressure me into it.

Since we'd be Rookie's anyway, there's nothing saying we can't dabble in a little Oval now and then anyway.

Yeah, I'm in for the roadracing too, but oval might be nice just for a bit of distraction. I actually tried some earlier and went straight into a practice session. I shouldn't have, because within 2 laps something happend (no clue what), and I ended up doing like a 5double roll :icon_eek: When it goes wrong it sure goes wrong on ovals...

I used to be a bit of a pro at oval racing...

I'm afraid i just can't afford this craziness, i vowed once never to pay a subscription for a game and i stand by that for the moment, especially as i have far too many games to finish as it is

EDIT: I would love to bet that i would beat ANY of you in a time trial/race (especially race) and you pay for a month or two :p

Put your money up Strokes! If you win we'll pay for a month and if we win you have to post a suitably embarassing picture up on here of you maybe holding a sign saying something of our choosing? :icon_twisted: hehe

Well that'll teach me to post drunk! I've gone daft and bought a months for the hell of it, lets see if its got (a whole lot) better.

Ya that was certainly a lot of fun and some very intense racing to be sure. I have to say though, you really have the pace at Lime Rock little P; I just can't keep up with you no matter how hard I try.

So i went into a race at Laguna today - aagh i hate rookies!
Led for 7 laps (after being rammed a little up the arse at the start), made a daft mistake and spun, then had to deal with the erratic noobs and eventually a backmarker that broke my car, still finished 4th though :(
And after all that i get to lose safety score

Still a decent result, and nice laptime at 1:44, I probably have to practice a hundred laps (or 200) before I can get that time...

btw, I'm one of those rookies too, lol.

You're not the same as some of those guys, i haven't seen you deliberately drive into anyone!
I don't believe you were hit deliberately but if you were, save the replay and file a protest with iRacing. They'll review it and rule on whether or not the driver in question is to be reprimanded.

I've been hit in Rookie Races too (we all have) but I'd blame it on lack of experience, carelessness or general stupidity rather than being deliberate.

Anyway, if you Race well enough you'll start being placed in higher splits with much more competent drivers (even at the Rookie Level) and the instances will be much fewer and far between.

...or you can approach it as we discussed yesterday and level up with TT's alone and have one race where you Grid at the beginning of the field. This alone will almost certainly see you in high split D-Class Races where the competition is much harder and the racing much cleaner and competent.

Totally agree, once you get placed within a higher split you will notice a difference immediately in skill level and racecraft from the other drivers
