Steam controller

So I got my steam controller yesterday, and so far I am rather disappointed. I fully admit I haven't had much time to test it yet, but so far what stands out is that both the analog stick and the ABXY buttons are very hard and uncomfortable to reach. Granted, my hands are probably more in the small to midsize range, but something's not right when I have to move my hand on the controller in order to reach the X button.

I've downloaded a controller set up for rocket league that utilizes the touchpad instead of the analog stick, but I have to play around with the sensitivity to possibly make it usable.
The control is also rather heavy, but I think you can also look it up via cable and thus remove the batteries, which should help in this regard.

Anyone else got this? Any tips?

Hmm. I read some reports stating that they were a bit unweildy. This seems to confirm it. I use a wired Xbox One controller and it's fantastic. Can you refund it if you've used it for less than two hours? :p

Sorry Johnny but I avoided the Steam controller like the plague. It's just been in design and redesign for so long I'm not surprised at all to hear there are issues with it.

How's the controller adventure going, Johnny?

I'm mainly interested in the part where you can use the controller as well for games that are normally designed to be used with a keyboard and mouse. Also any specific configuration options that jump out of the norm.

I'm still tempted to try one, since the majority of negative reviews sound like they were written by someone who didn't take the time to get used to something new like this.

Basically the same reason as to why pretty soon I will try one of those BeeRaider keyboards to see if I can finally get rid of this slow QWERTY layout.

(Yes, QWERTY was made to slow us down when typing, because otherwise the mechanical arms of the old typewriter machines would get stuck in each other).

Ordered mine today after reading more and more positive reviews about it, can't wait to try it out.

One of the best reviews on steam:

"My review for the Steam Controller is very simple.
This controller is like a fap with the other hand:

-It feels completely unfamiliar but nice in a new kind of way.
-It kinda works but it's not so easy at the beginning, you have to practice a lot.
-You'll end up going the traditional way if you're not patient enough.
-You know it feels good, you know you are pleasant with it, but you can't just hit the spot just yet. Either not accurate enough or quick enough.
-A mind blowing experience if mastered."

Received it yesterday morning.

So far I only had a few hours on it with a mix of different games and for me this controller has already found a specific place in my gaming arsenal.

Will it replace keyboard and mouse? Hell no!
except for those evenings you come home tired and don't want to spend the evening behind your desk and play your city building game or strategy game from the sofa. And that's exactly what I needed lately :p

I struggled a lot when I tried GTA V with it. Even though that game has good (xbox360) controller support built in and it seems also a good Steam controller default profile, I simply couldn't get a grip on using the right-side touchpad as a joystick function. I didn't have the time anymore to try different configuration settings, but I'll definatly play some more with this to see if I can get somewhat of a compromise here.

For the moment it has a big "perfect to chill, very bad to thrill" feeling on it for me, but that's maybe also part of getting used to it. For these slow-paced games it didn't take me all that long to get a grip on the controls and Cities Skylines was simply a pleasure to play with it from the sofa on the big screen :D

The options to configure are great as well. I do understand it could be overwhelming for somebody but for the tweaker I am myself: you can never have enough options. Touchpads can be setup as mouse/joystick/directional pad/button layout functions and every button can be configured to any key from your keyboard.

The haptic feedback dissapointed me a bit. I find it nice in it's lowest setting only, anything else was just plain irritating. Don't expect any rumbling feedback either since the maximum setting of this will look like there's a few musquitos flying around drunk in it.

I'm going to replace my Odroid-U2, running Debian and the steam client on my TV to do in-house streaming, for a Steam Link next month since I couldn't get the controller working on it and had to keep it connected to my main pc that streams. This was causing some issues because of the distance between both of them :(

So for the moment I am happy with it, but so far only for the specific reason to play my slow-paced strategy, rpg, construction, etc PC Games with the comfort of the sofa and a big screen.
