Oculus Rift for iRacing

Now that iRacing supports Oculus Rift, I thought I'd open the eyes (hehe) of some of you who aren't familiar with it.

Personally I used to think this sort of thing was more gimmicky than anything. It didn't interest me too much, I thought it was something that really wouldn't go far. I could see its applications, in a lot of fighter games or racing games like this... shooters, etc.

But take a look at this:

I'm blown away. The immersion level is just incredible. It takes trackir's face tracking to a whole new level. I can barely describe how immersive and intuitive it looks and feels, just from the youtube video. That crappy, segmented video meant to be viewed from two different eye pieces.

As far as price goes it is a great deal in my opinion. TrackIR goes for over one hundred bucks. Then to get something similar you'd need a 2-3 screen setup to really get to that level of immersion. The Oculus Rift DK2 goes for $350... so it seems more than reasonable to me. Only thing I find strange is the ordering for it. It claims to be released months ago yet still their page only directs you to a preorder.

Very promising. Even though I love to see people's pits with their screen setups and awesome chairs... this can easily make those screens obsolete as far as I'm concerned. Only thing now is for me to try it out. I wonder just how long I could stand to stare at a screen that is inches from my face, and how comfortable that would be to wear for long periods of time.

Anyone else tried it or want to try it? Considering it?

I've been watching Oculus Rift for some time now but will wait a few years until the technology has been perfected and the bugs worked out of it.

As far as I know, it is still not HD capable and still looks pretty bulky IMHO. I'm not sure of the unit weight but wearing it for long periods of time with a headset may lead to neck fatigue.

The other issue I have is I wear pretty strong prescription glasses and I've heard you can wear the Oculus without them but I have my doubts here as well. The simple fact is that my eyes are worse than the average persons so even a close image may not be as clear for me as it would for someone with 20/20 vision.

It is on my wish list but probably not within the next few years; for now the combination of Track IR and my 120Hz BenQ satisfies all my needs perfectly.

No doubt. I have no plans of getting it yet but it seems like it is poised to really takeover the market. It has a strong case, just a bit more to go.

I wonder if it is feasible for them to team up with another headset company to make an all-in-one headset. It only makes sense.

As for HD and screen, that will come when a consumer model releases, I'm positive. If my new phone is almost a 4k display, oculus will at least have full HD. I too though have reservations about eye strain. I wear contacts and my eyes are terrible... i'd be VERY surprised if this isn't damaging to your vision.

I'm waiting for the consumer release, and I've already got the money put aside. I cannot wait for the release of the final version, the games I like to play are absolutely perfect for it. It's the reason I've not gone for a multiple 4K monitors etc. and instead have bought a 27" one that is sitting on my desk as of today.
I'm reluctant to try a DK2 as I want the first time I use a Rift to be the absolute first time so I get that "wow" factor.

It can't come soon enough for me...

Good move. My brother just got his DK2 recently, and while he likes it he definitely says resolutions are too low.

I'd really like to try one before I buy. Guess I'll have to wait until the consumer version is out.

Waiting for consumer version as well, however I'm ambivalent since I believe that the Cast AR and a real simpit would be outstanding. Read the latest intervju here:

Oculus has the drawback of not seeing anything but the VR, however together with this new Kickstarter it could be the perfect solution to all our wishes.
