DCS World - Digital Combat Simulator

Wanted to check this out because I read they are close to releasing a fully operational F14-A (and B) Tomcat for DCS including carrier ops. This is something I've wanted to really get into for a long time, and as I sad recently I'm looking for a more simulator type of experience recently from games. That and DCS looked beautiful in screenshots etc. so wanted to check it out for the eye candy too.

Well, I bought the F-15C Eagle module (as it;s another aircraft I;ve always been interested in) and decided to go against everything you should do before taking on the task of getting the thing even started up and in the air.

So, I didn't rtfm or even bind any keys on the X-52 Pro, going with the hit every key and button until something happens approach. Miraculously I got the Eagle in the air running on one engine it seems, promptly hit the open canopy button by accident causing the canopy to fly off it's hinges, then decided to try and land as;

a. I couldn't figure out how to retract the landing gear and

b. my pilots face resembled something akin to Jeremy Clarkson when he was driving the Ariel Atom on Top Gear.

Well I also accidentally hit the screenshot key when trying to figure out how to change the camera angle and then I get this comment from Shilka which actually made me lol and pretty much sums up my experience in flight sims so far

But I'm having a blast (literally)!

I got an e-mail from Eagle a few days ago that stated a lot of their modules are on sale right now.

I currently have DCS World installed with the KA-50 Black Shark and the Huey and whatever planes come with it by default.

I'm more than willing to pick this up again if other people are interested in it. Now having an X-55 may make this far more enjoyable than it was on my Logitech 3D Pro.

We are going to be on tonight Duke, Quick and I have the F-15C module installed, I'm currently learning the basics. I have startup, taxiing and take off nailed, I'm moving on to radar and firing now.

I must say this is a lot of fun and the graphics are gorgeous :)

I read the Huey is a real bitch to pilot did you ever get the hang of it?

The F-15C Eagle is worth the few quid definitely, I'm really enjoying flying around in it :icon_cool:

I'd love to join tonight but Thursdays are always Elite: Dangerous for me as I stream them and am trying desperately hard to maintain this schedule.

It's possible I have a new person joining in from my last E D Twitch Stream so it's important I stick to it, sorry guys. :icon_confused:

Hmm, my UH1H module is working fine but somehow my fc3 and f15 aren't valid anymore... didn't know keys expired?

No problem. Quick can't get it to work anyway. I'll join in with some ED later, maybe we might be able to see each other this time

Its odd because sometimes there's no issue but sometimes connecting is almost impossible.

It seems like Zac has more success getting people in Wing in my Group than I do which baffles me lol.

I used to fly DCS a ton with the flightsim group I was a part of. I've toyed with the idea of downloading DCS World on my race rig a few months ago. Thought about getting the Hawk. Connection issues to servers were sometimes hit and miss back then to, but IIRC we generally got connected to each more often than not. Depending on who was hosting, there could sometimes be warping/rubber banding issues.

Would love to fly with you guys if yall could make a Sunday/Monday evening sometime! Never really got into running missions per se, but really took to formation type of flying.

It's not the connection, one of my steam keys isn't valid somehow.... (How does that work lol)

It's in Pea's first post, the screenshot with the F15 has a comment under it :)

Refunded.

Not only were the issues I kept having with my joystick ridiculous (no roll, especially to the left, despite being mapped correctly) the game just is not anywhere near a simulator.

Might have a realistic FM and all, but for the most part everything else leaves a lot to be desired. I knew something was amiss when Li-uhl P told me you can turn all the electronics on and off with the push of one button.

Not sure why I had joystick issues, especially when I use the same one as Quick... but basically whenever using the roll to turn, it would respond extremely lightly or not at all. I could get a tiny bit of roll right and almost none left.

The f15c is currently being developed to get rid of the 1 - button starts it all thing.
Any module over 30$ has simulator quality controls.
The UH1H is a great example for that, i'll upload a video later in which i will attempt the start up as it should be done.

The FC3 planes in DCS are all simplified compared to BMS.
But the more expensive modules are on par with BMS.

That's good to know Quick, thank you. I'll watch for your video and I'll take a look again when they really go over the F-15 (not sure why they'd do the C either, I'd like to see the E)

I still say it will never touch BMS as far as a campaign and dynamic missions go, not to mention Red Flags and all.

There's campaigns for DCS, and i think there might be a Red Flag kinda Op as well.

The F15C and E are both in the game so i guess that they will add the flyable "E" a bit later... if they're smart that is.

I never said they didn't have campaigns and red ops. I know it does. Just saying it's got nothing on BMS's. The real time Red Flag campaigns that take place in real time for weeks is awesome and can't be beat.

I'd like to see a flyable E. It's nice to have the multirole fighter.

But in BMS (when it worked) we were always starting on the taxiway with engines already running and everything else, so what's the difference? :p

Using that logic even this basic Module with "one button" engine startup is more a sim than the BMS experience lol ;)

If I remember correctly, DCS modules should give you the option for simple and advanced startup procedures.

They did it for those that don't want to spend 2+ minutes starting up their aircraft (such as the KA50 Black Shark) and months of getting familiar with how to do so.

At least that's the way it is with the KA50 and the Huey, I can't speak for the other modules.
