HTC Vive vs Oculus Rift

I've been searching for a demo site for one of these for a while now - mainly oculus... which started Best Buy store demos a few months ago, but the closest one is over an hour away (and out of the way, for anywhere I usually go)...

But at the mall near here there's a Windows store and they have a demo for the Vive. I didn't try it at the time, but I plan to go back. My issue is that the demo looked awful, it looks like the worst showcase for VR... its called space pirate:

Really bummed out. I still will go back and try it, but I couldn't think of a worse demo to highlight the advantages of VR and the wow factor of immersion.

My kid was asking me for it. I told him to come up with $1,000 and i would be happy to order it for him.

That game is one of the ones I haven't bought as it does seem very lame.

However, these titles look amazing and I can't wait to try them all.

So far I have bought for the Vive:

- Big Screen
- Virtual Desktop
- Audioshield
- The Lab
- Pool Nation VR
- Portal Stories: VR
- The Blu
- Job Simulator
- Tilt Brush
- Fantastic Contraption

Titles I already have that are fully optimized for the Vive to play:

- DCS World
- Project Cars
- Elite: Dangerous Horizons

Titles I have that can be played with the Vive using VorpX and other means I'm going to try some time later:

- Euro & American Truck Simulator
- Assetto Corsa
- Alien: Isolation
- GTA 5
- Minecraft
- Skyrim

And finally titles I will pick up if I feel the need for more from the Oculus store which can now freely be played with the Vive:

- Eve: Valkyrie
- The Climb
- Adrift
- Edge of Nowhere
- Lucky's tale

But I should have enough to be getting on with until then.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions... of all the fucking demos they could feature.

I just found this though and... holy shit... the editing technique... oh my god... probably the best Oculus / VR video I've ever seen.

No problem. They are probably using that one as it is very "noob" friendly ie. next to no motion sickness risk and a very visceral feel to it, coupled with it being very easy to pick up. The trouble is it's one of those titles that's not got any depth to it. For a demo it would be interesting I guess but not something to pick up and then play at home.

I'm really looking forward to Project Cars (or Assetto Corsa and iRacing) for the same reason as this video shows. From watching and hearing peoples reactions it really feels like you are sitting in the car (also imagine DCS World being 20,000 feet in the air!). I do love these videos with the mix of VR and a green screen. Very clever. VR Is probably the closest thing I'll get to driving some of my favourite cars on my favourite tracks (certainly on a daily basis) so I cannot wait. The most common reaction seems to be "HOLY **** It feels like I'm actually here sitting in this car!"

Awesome.

If I was an open-cockpit driver, I'd be all over this... obviously with VR.

Works with all games that output a speed value, like iRacing, Dirt Rally, PCars, Assetto Corsa, No limits roller coaster, AMS and tons of other sims.

I'm sorry; but VR is a niche product at best.
Accessibility alone makes this technology so.
Note that accessibility is a deadly combination of price (ffs REALLY? That much to put all this crap on my head/scatter around my SMALL gaming room/Have to deal with support for different components within the system), ergonomics (see previous bracketed comments), AND physical ability (Don't bother with any of this stuff if you have any kind of physical disability. Eg. My 57 year old back/bum hip).
If these companies find a way to make the systems much more accesible...we'll see.

I did get a chance to try Oculus last weekend FINALLY (which is cheaper than Vive and does not have anything to scatter around your room) and I was pretty thrilled with it. The screen could have a tiny bit more ways to go, as far as resolution goes, but it is very good. The head tracking is incredibly accurate, absolutely no issues. Was blown away at how smooth and natural it really is.

I'm not sure about your complaint about ergonomics. I know a lot of people imagine this to be uncomfortable for long periods of time but you can't really speak to it unless you try it.

Also I'm not sure about your complaint regarding disabilities - it completely depends on your disability... if you already sit in a chair playing a game, nothing is changing except now you're moving your head around...

I'll probably pick up VR in it's 3rd or 4th iteration because I'm sure by then all the issues that crop up will be solved by then. It will also be a lot more ergonomic and lighter weight by then as well.

For me my only concerns are neck strain after long play sessions and issues relating to glasses related issues such as glare (particularly noticeable if you have a small scratch or smudge on your glasses as most everyone does), circulation, and fit.

1. Don't worry about extended play sessions. I've worn my Vive for over 2 hours in one go... no problem at all.

2. WIth the Vive you don't have to scatter anything about your room, I have it neatly installed on the walls using the supplied brackets with all wires hidden, it's not difficult to make it look very neat, no wires trailing anywhere. The base stations communicate wirelessly via bluetooth so that's not an issue. I have a third basestation on a gorillapod (the basestations fit any tripod as it has a standard camera mount) in front of my monitor which is in a separate area for seated games like driving sims and elite dangerous and it all works seamlessly once setup for the first time.

4. Don't worry about glasses, it's never been an issue for me with the Vive. With the Rift DK2 I had it was a little tricky, can't comment on the CV1 though. With the Vive you get various sized foam face pads and also it's very easy to adjust the lenses to accommodate specs. Me personally I use it without glasses and I don't have an issue with eyesight. There are companies out there selling lens overlays that match your prescription too if you really want to not wear glasses in there and are very shortsighted.

3. Price is relative. For me, VR (especially room scale VR) is definitely worth it. It's absolutely mind blowing the kind of experiences I've had, and continue to have. It really is that damn good. I have over 32 Vive games (that I've not refunded) and a few Rift exclusive games I play using the revive injector and holy **** are they good. I really try not to go on about it here or on teamspeak because nobody likes that guy but honestly it is the best gaming experience I've had in my 28 years gaming (I'm 36). The thing is I was worried it would be a fad, that I would maybe get bored with it but nope. Had the Vive since it was released and it is still absolutely epic every single time I go in there. I built the PC up slowly upgrading the GFX card when the time was right so I didn't have the huge outlay of a whole new PC to worry about. I would estimate that the total cost of getting the Vive setup in my home (including the 980Ti and the extra basestation and vive itself) at £1,100 and seriously, it was worth every damn penny for the joy it has brought not just me but also more importantly, my friends and family. They are all still to this day asking when they can come back round for another go, even my 82 year old Grandad loves it. He can't quite believe this technology exists, and kicks ass in Space Pirate Trainer lol

If you use it as a social thing like I do it's a fantastic device to own and share.

So you know what I've kinda been backing / leaning towards these past months / year+ when it comes to VR. Well I can finally say I've tried both now and...

I don't want Oculus anymore.

It pains me to say it but @little P is right... I mean how often is that uttered? The Vive is great, that much better. Oculus was good, extremely smooth VR experience... and I didn't think it would be a big deal to move around and such, but it is... and it's amazing.

First, like I said, the room scale VR is way better than I thought it would be. It's not simply moving around, walking to the edge of a cliff, like in the Mountain demo scene... It's SO much more. The view was stunning and it was pretty enthralling. But the first thing that floored me was, during that same mountain scene, bending over and reaching down for a stick and to pet the toy / mechanical dog. I really felt like I was there, bending over to pick up and throw this stick.

There is this "reach out and touch" sort of feeling you have with a lot of things in VR and it was there in Oculus. In the Oculus demo there was a railing right next me, over the edge of a tall building that I almost wanted to reach out and grab. THAT feeling is way more present within Vive and I don't think it's really explainable in words because I believe it's more of a subconscious feeling, that you're really to the point of feeling you're there and not just wearing goggles. And I would say that the extra ability, yes the room scale part but especially the small details of being able to lean and bend over or kneel or whatever are translated perfectly.

After the mountain demo I played a bit of the bow and arrow game, which is a lot of fun as I expected. Wish I could've played more. Then switched to the space pirate trainer or whatever it's called. I wanted to use these examples to bring up the last part of my amazement which was another part the oculus demo lacked: controllers. I could not believe how precise the controllers were. Within the bow and arrow game (and mountain scene) the controllers were just virtual versions of their controllers, with a bow / arrow within them. So you saw the controller itself and how you were holding it. I can't say much other than the range of motion and tracking was fricking perfect. The track pad-type thing is a bit awkward to learn but I'm sure it gets easy with use. Turning, tilting everything with the controller was exact. But you could see the controllers just as if you didn't have the headset on which is good and all in some cases...

But then when I went into the space pirate demo, bam, the entirety of the controller was gone and they became guns. Or a shield. Perfectly. The gun rotated when I wanted to shoot like a thug / ganster... and spewed death and missed as per usual. It was so real it was unreal.

You didn't see me do a long write up like this for Oculus because it was what I expected - static VR that would work well in a stationary envirunment. But the demos it gave weren't the best and it wasn't an awesome sell. I still think the Oculus would be good for stationary-type VR, like anything cockpit based. But the Vive demo blew me away... it is everything and more than Oculus and well worth it... like I said it is that much more in depth and that much more believable, especially because, like I highlighted, there's little things Oculus can't do, not simply just walking around.

It pains me to say it but I was wrong and P was right. I'm on board Vive now.

That's great to read man and echos what everyone who has tried the Vive at my house has said. It feels like you are there. The brain is completely fooled eh. Once you put that HMD on all of a sudden you get to be in a perfect holodeck like experience. And the 1:1 tracking is astonishing the first time you experience it, I'm glad you got that buzz too :)

My wife and I just tried out Alone VR - a very rudimentary horror esque experience. It's not just the fact you are there, but with a good pair of wireless over ear cans with surround it's the audio queues that combine with what you are seeing that in this instance terrified the living crap out of us. As soon as I entered this experience I had real goosebumps, and genuine fear was flowing through me (among other things). The laughing soon turned to deadly silence, heavy breathing, my heart was racing, a few subtle things happened like I would go in a room (and it's dark, you only have a torch) look around, and a toy robot that was by the tv stand when I last looked is now on a shelf. It sounds like nothing as I type it but when you are in there it's deeply unsettling. Then I walk back out of the room (after checking round the corners) and the chairs that where round the table are now stacked on top of another in the middle of the room. F***. THAT. I managed about another 5 minutes until I was in a room and I heard loud thumping footsteps coming up the corridor outside the room I was in, my torch went out and I genuinely felt like something was about to steal my soul. I ripped the headset off, swore my ass off and we will never play that game again. Instead I'll use it to demonstrate to some of our "oh I don't scare easily" mates just how immersive VR actually is...

Incidentally Daunt I tried iRacing with the Vive last night (much to Zac's annoyance lol) and it's WAY better than Assetto Corsa or Project Cars in terms of how it performs. It runs great and the sensation of speed and awareness you get is astounding. You'll love it :)

Hopefully now people will believe me when I say it's worth the extra for the Vive and it's room scale as you are just depriving yourself of that opportunity if you get the Rift. Even when Oculus Touch is released it still won't be anything like the Vive as it's designed for forward facing experiences only which is such an odd decision from them. It''s like they've gone for "room scale lite". What they didn't count on I think is the Vive being so damn good at what it does with room scale and it's basestation tech, and also the devs out there creating some truly amazing experiences that are still only beginning to take full advantage of that technology.

It's a good time to be a gamer that's for damn sure!

That is really great to hear about iRacing. And I can't wait to have all those immersive moments like you say.

As I said it's not just about it being room-scale - it completely tricks you from the big things to the little things like bending over or leaning over, etc. And yeah the controllers and such all add up to Vive being far ahead of oculus.

Have you tried a flight sim? I am not sure if there is a really realistic one that has vive support.

And also, a friend of a friend just bought the Vive but doesn't have many high quality VR games to choose from just yet, so I was talking with him and trying to convince him to stop by one weekend soon so we can try out some games he doesn't have / I can try iRacing on VR. He has Pcars and stuff but I was like phsssssssh. So he can try iRacing and Dirt Rally and Elite on my system and then I can steal his Vive.

Flight sim? DCS World. It's EPIC. I'm waiting for them to finish the F-14 Tomcat module then I'll be buzzing the tower like an 80's reject!

Sounds like a good plan with the vive owner. iRacing is so good on the Vive I've just bought six tracks including the nordschleife... I want to see how iRacing's green hell is compared to AC and PC.

Pretty sweet man. That's interesting way to handle the RIO, too. Should be entertaining seeing you crash... i mean fly that thing. And negative, ghostrider.

I am wondering about the setup of Vive. What if you elect not to use those sensors? Or do you have to use 4? Is there a minimum square footage? A maximum?

I'm wondering how it would handle, if I used it for iRacing for example, the pretty enclosed, small space of my cockpit. You know what it looks like. The ceiling of it is maybe 1 foot above my head, so would that even work?

little P

Super Mod
negative, ghostrider.
dammit

Yes it would work in there, I bought an extra basestation which sits on a small tripod above my monitor as my PC desk sits out of the FOV of the two basestations I have mounted on the wall in the lounge. I have two profiles setup (one for seated one for room scale) that switches which basestations are powered and tracking depending on what I'm doing. It's very easy to do and saves me having to move any basestations.

One thing you do not want do btw is move them at all (not even a tiny amount) while they are powered. They have 70 sensors in each one including a gyro so you must never touch them if they are powered (even in standby).

The maximum distance between base stations is 5 metres, they need to be above head height (I have mine mounted 6 foot 4 high and angled down around 35 degrees). The minimum area for room scale is 2m x 1.5m but you will want more than that for some experiences and games otherwise some things will be unreachable as they will be outside those boundaries. I play room scale in a 3m x 2m space and I haven't had any issues with space inside VR.
