iRacing Audi 90 IMSA GTO

I had this car up on my wall when I was a kid, it was the main reason behind me owning an '89 and a '91 300ZX one after the other...

but, there was no denying the Audi 90 from the same series was a complete nutjob of a car, and I always loved the way it sounded. This video is a great little documentary on it, and it's cool that it's coming to iRacing. I've been enjoying driving it in Project Cars and especially Assetto Corsa, I wonder what series they will create for the Audi 90 to run in? I would love it if eventually they created all the IMSA GT cars and ran them together but I know that's probably asking too much. Anyway, check this out:

So happy. The video and history is truly something special. What a car. What orgasmic sound.

I'm booking a flight to get home right this second...

I'm not so sure we will see it in an official series, honestly. It already isn't in this season, I believe, though I've been off the site for over a week now. I'd not be surprised if it I'd only found in private leagues.

Curiously though I'd love to hear your thoughts on the direct comparison between iracings version and the others.

Watched the release live today and was pleasantly surprised. I had previous knowledge of the Quattro from being a long time fan of rallying. I couldn't tell you how many times I've watched the old Group B rally videos. My somewhat recent interest in road racing had left me with no idea they had taken this beast to strictly tarmac over here in the states. I'm really envious of new subscribers, all I got was the free content and the month I paid for. Alright, I'll stop whining. Looking forward to driving this car!

Chris because of that thumbnail I thought you meant you'd actually driven the car in the metal...

Daunt - It's hard to compare them (if I bought it for iRacing) as Assetto Corsa's Audi 90 is a mod (albeit a very good one - one of the best), and Project Cars is an arcade game compared to iRacing and AC so doesn't count no matter how good it looks and sounds. I'd bet the Audi 90 in iRacing is the closest simulated version for sure.

heh. Has anyone heard if they are going to get in cockpit animations sorted soon? When playing normally the fov usually means you don't see that part of the cockpit but in VR you see it all. The first thing I noticed is the arms are seemingly glued to the steering wheel

I'm not quite sure I know what you mean, but the hands are a problem for some people in VR since the animations only move through 180° of steering rotation. The new driver model has helped a lot but the rotation is the main issue now.

Well yes the rotation has always been a problem with it's lack of rotation (I don't understand why btw games have been doing arm over arm for years) but I also mean the hands do not reach down for the shifter etc.

I'm sure they are on it as they are officially supporting VR, it's well known that things ideally have to be 1:1 in VR for it to really trick your mind into being there. The best VR experiences are the ones that do this, Elite Dangerous for example when using an X-52 HOTAS (which is identical to the HOTAS in-game) is particularly good at this.

Driving a car in VR is weird if you are reaching down for a shifter in reality but in-game the hands aren't moving off the wheel.

I've got faith they will sort this though in time for November (I think that's the black friday deal time?) in time for a re-sub :)

Yeah I hope they work on all of that, but I'm not really that flummoxed.

Some people turn the hands in-game off since they only do wheel rotation, but I think it takes away from immersion having no arms at all, especially since the new driver model is so much better than the previous.

I normally run without arms and wheel, because if your monitor and fov are set up perfectly (assuming no vr) your real wheel should be in place of the virtual one. In my case my wheel overlaps the screen on the bottom and it would be stupid to have another wheel showing.

That said, when I record, I have everything turned on for viewer's sake

Oh yeah like I said driving with the correct fov it's not even an issue but now they are supporting VR they need to address this sort of thing if they want to be on the cutting edge. I'm sure they will in time sort it out soon. TM :)

Back to the Audi though, imagine how awesome this thing must have been to drive, they really don't make 'em like they used to eh. I'm hoping to see one at Goodwood festival of speed one day, it ran in 2014 and sounded amazing.

This car is a blast!!!! Ran it in a HS on Bathhurst Tuesday and on LeMans last night. What a great car, particularly on LeMans. Wish they had it for the 24HR. The sound is impeccable. Shifting is a little tricky in the lower gears, still working on that, but so awesome!!!! Wonder what is up for next week, maybe a new series for the A90 :D

I uploaded a video of me trying to drive this beast of a car. The thing behaves like some of the cars in DiRT Rally and is a hell of a lot of fun to throw around and power through corners.
Are you using a VR headset there or just a track IR? That makes the track look totally different than I remember. Also holy crap this car looks awesome. The BOV and turbo noises are awesome.

That's the view from the window iRacing renders onto your monitor when you're using VR. It takes the view out of my left eye and undistorts it so you can see it clearly. I recorded it and cropped the video, so it may look a little off with where I'm looking at times.
