2017 VLN Championship Series

Thanks so much for the setups Sam!!!! I will check them out. I am finding with the 911 and setup, temperature may make a big difference. I will run clean in a practice session and then go out to a hosted session and slide all over the place or vice versa. Is it strange to think there is a need to develop different setups for different temperatures? Not sure what temperature 24HR will be since I think it should be dynamic.
i haven´t given that much thought i guess tire pressures could be changed but how should you change them accordingly to weather? it also makes a big difference when a track is rubbered in or not.

i think the sliding problem might have something to do with camber because if you look at the tire data of a full stint you will most likely have destroyed the inside of the tire while the middle is still fine :)
but giving the car less camber will make it slide more???? too complicated xD

improved set i think. less understeer and powersliding. better tire wear (still not perfect)
more reliable and faster overall.

only problem is that your driving and mostly throttle control have to be on point every corner. you'll just understeer into the wall with the slightest mistake.

if you can get this down you can push the car and still have a reliable endurance set.

can someone test this and tell me if it's an improvement for them? :p

edit:
no new tire pressures were used (still minimal pressures)
v3 Q is still the best for qualifying (more sliding is faster but also a great way to destroy your tires)

Sam, I gave this a try last night and I need more brake bias and less wing. I need to look at the toe again, but I was testing another setup that had a toe of -3/64 on the front instead of -1/64 that seemed to help with pushing in the corners. Will do some more testing.

yeah brake bias is just personal preference just keep in mind that you can gain alot of time in the porche under braking, that's why i have it this low :)

for as far as i know nearly everyone is using a set that will make the car turn in better (which is what you're describing) my V3 is more like that. i guess my driving style is just so different that v4 is actually faster for me and i find it more reliable especially over a full stint.

i still hate how the tires become almost non existant after 6-7 laps and i haven't found a way to prevent that yet ;( but im done working on setups now, maybe for VLN 3.

and how are the qualifying lap times for you? with my current time i think i'll get top split if not too many more people better it. so will i see you in top split? :p

Highly unlikely unless no other Porsche sets a QT :p Yeah, the problem I have with brake bias that low is, if I have to react and hit the brakes even somewhat hard, say from I missed apex or another driver, unless the wheel is perfectly straight, the car spins, there's just no room for error. Wing at 1 works better than I thought it would. I also reduced ARB to 5, can fly through the Karoussel, like unbelievable, and the track after that, now if I could just do that on the front of the track :) It does hurt you on the two sweeping right handers after the first uphill jump. If I don't talk to you tonight, have a great race tomorrow, be awesome!!!!!

i'm most likely not gonna make it into top split either. there's 19 guys with an 8:15 or lower but not a single 8:16 xD i guess i'm doing something wrong because i'm stuck with a 8:17,4 at 21st position ;(

but i haven't lost hope yet :) last time i got in with a 26th position. i guess i'll find out tommorow.

you too have a great race and good luck! :)

i discovered something awesome: you can drive insane Q lap times with an extremely low brake bias. i just drove a 8:16:7 on 41% :p (with trail-braking)

this just shows i've still got a lot to learn :)
but maybe i'll be top-split after all.

once again awesome race! i just love this series :)
made top split and ended in 14th position. much stronger field this time so i'm definitly really happy with this result. i even made it into the post-race interviews. so check the stream if you wanna cringe for a bit :p

how did your races go? @Jes_971 @Noodleguitar did you drive this race?

CONGRATS Sam, great jobt!!!! For me, this was the most hilarious VLN ever and why I love this series too. I have adopted some new racing strategies as well!

So, first time VLN in 911, Reid was driving first. Went in to warm-up with Reid driving and with one minute left, I noticed the set-up was wrong. We were suppose to start 3rd on grid (which can be a disaster on the Ring behind the GT3s). Had to fix the set-up, missed grid and had to start from pits, dead last, hilarious!!!! By lap 4 we were up to 14th. Reid crashed but brought in to the pits, I took over, moved us up to 9th. Since our pit stall was last I missed the pit stall when I came in and couldn't back into it. I wanted to keep driving until I ran out of gas, but Reid said I should get a tow because he thought they would tow us backwards, but guess what, that is a no go. :( Okay, so this is the funniest, after the tow, we came out of the pit in 7th place. Bedo drove the last stint and moved us to 6th. So we finished 6th!!!!!

So, now the question is, is it better to start in pit on the Ring so you can drive offensively vs. defensively? And the big question, is the tow truck really faster than the race cars :D Just hilarious, the only explanation is there must have been a pretty big crash for the cars ahead of us while we sat in the pits. So, I think my racing strategy has evolved, maybe I'll just keep getting towed around the track

So, Duke, just goes to show you, you don't have to be fast to race the Ring, just keep it on the track. So, suck it up, put your pick girl panties on and join the fun :p

Nice one Sam! Often there are a couple of top-split Germans who are ridiculously fast.

Wow Deb, interesting. Isn't the towing time around the lap something like 9 minutes? So that would potentially be faster than doing a lap by yourself I guess. Would be weird because that could be abused like hell but the time difference probably isn't very large.

I wasn't in this race because I didn't have much time to practice again. Hopefully the next one, which will be in a while because the 24 hour is in-between now and then.

sounds like an eventfull race! must be fun to start last but finish 6th, good job on that!

what do you mean that you couldn't back into it? i think even if you make an illegal pit-in you should be able to get into the pit stall with just a 15 second hold penalty. and that's definitly faster than a whole lap on the TOW truck :).

starting in pit is loads safer so it should be a valid strategy :) because i definitly agree that a big part of racing the Ring is keeping it on track.

i'm not gonna say anything about Duke because i'm afraid he'll might bully me :p but i would definitly recommend anyone to join the fun that is VLN.

Actually, the tow time was 12 minutes, so I can't figure out how we gained two spots will being towed. There must have been a crash, but it was hilarious when I thought I screwed up totally and we came two spots ahead of where I had us. I guess that's racing!!!! I do know that if that happens again, I'll just keep driving until I run out of gas, but hopefully it won't happen again.

When I tried to back-up they said you r going the wrong way, which meant if I kept going I would be disqualified. Do you think you can pull into the wrong pit stall and still be okay, didn't seem like it?

i'd try to just illegally reverse back into pitlane worst that can happen is losing 15 seconds :)
Edit: just by how far did you miss the pitstall? xD you can back off pretty far before getting black flagged. besides isn't the first black flag just another 15 second hold? (i might be wrong on that, do not try at home :p)

and yeah Noël i wasn't part of the fastest guys i even said that in my interview but this is one hell of an experience and i hope to be in top split a lot more, i'm learning so much!

First you get a warning and then a couple of seconds later if you ignore that you get disqualified from the whole race. iRacing doesn't like people going the wrong way :)

Yeah, I got the warning and didn't want to get disqualified. Have had that happened playing demo derby and you get kicked out of the session so you really can't reverse for very long. I guess I need to do some research if you can pull into any pit stall, because it didn't seem like you could.

yes, we were the very last, but I guess our guy was kind of hidden behind the aluminum barrier so he was hard to see. I drove a few stalls past and couldn't back up enough without getting the going the wrong way message. Well, hopefully that wont happen again, but if it does I know to just keep going until I run out of gas.
