4X Space Games

Anyone around that loves the space 4X genre as much as I do? Space Empires series, Sins of a Solar Empire, Sword of the Stars, Endless Space, Masters of Orion, Galactic Civilizations, I could go on.

That said, I am looking into a new one that is up and coming on steam that looks amazing:

Share your thoughts and opinions! Maybe I can find someone else to play some space 4x games with. I've never tried playing them multiplayer but could be a lot of fun.

I do like space games, but to be honest I've never been fond of one of the X-es, the exterminate part. I lean more towards the roleplay part, the explore, diplomacy and trade part, and I often find these parts snowed under by most peoples desire for battle and conquest by war. Some of these games have awesome possibilities, but usually the large majority of players always seem to lean towards a shoot on sight policy :(

I agree... the other x's get pushed under the rug due to bloodlust. And it is for good reason a big part of space games. But not at the expense of other X's!

I highly recommend you take a peek at the one I linked, it is supposed to have a great economic and diplomacy. If anything, the exterminate is a much smaller part of the game.

If I can get one or two people interested in trying it out, maybe we can stream it. For now, it's only 20 bucks on steam.

Kind of interesting. I just picked up Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity and Rebellion during their last big Steam sale (got 'em for, like, $10 together, I think).

I haven't found a game that I enjoyed as much as Master of Orion 1 or 2 in ages, though. I like GalCiv, but DAMN it's hard at times.

Honestly, I agree that warfare ends up seeming to dominate games like these -- both the space-based ones and the terrestrial ones. The "peaceful builder" model never fully works, because there's always some psychotic AI out there that you have to deal with.

I broke down and bought this Star Ruler 2 and I can say it is fun. I like to focus on military myself because I love being a fleet commander, but this game I haven't done that at all, it takes a lot of economic and political power to throw your weight around. You spend a lot of time setting up trade routes and everything... I think its a lot of fun.

Might be worth a look when it's on sale. At the moment, I'm working through a pretty deep back-catalog of games both on GOG and Steam, though, so I'm not really looking to jump in just yet.
