A Gamers Tale - Gaming Fiction

For a while now I've had this story concept locked in the back of my mind where its unhappily remained.

...that is until now.

As it stands, I have a few chapters drafted and was wondering if the Community would be interested in reading them?

I don't think it's any Pulitzer Prize winning stuff but I do believe it makes for an interesting read.

It's not meant to be a book, merely a collection of experiences tied together in a common (and possibly slightly dark) theme.

Currently I have a Prologue and about 2 Chapters complete with the others simply awaiting pen readiness.

Overall, many Chapters are complete without actually being written yet story beginning and ending are still hazy which is interesting to me.

Please let me know if you're interested in reading these stories and I'll post Chapters on the Blog.

Just know it will not come out all at once.

I have a tendency to say too much if I type so all is drafted pen to paper prior to publish.
  1. A Gamers Life - Introduction
  2. A Gamers Life - Void
  3. A Gamers Life - Now and Then
  4. A Gamers Life - The Learning
  5. A Gamers Life - Amidst the Shadows
  6. A Gamers Life - Shadow
  7. A Gamers Life - Instinctively
  8. A Gamers Life - Bracing
  9. A Gamers Life - Unpleasant Slumber

Your description is pretty vague on what the story really entails. Maybe on purpose? But I'd love to read excerpts / parts of it.

The first three chapters are up (if you can call them that). All are incredibly short and that's simply to keep things moving.

These are all groundwork chapters with the first being an Introduction. I chose Introduction over Prologue as I'm not sure if there will be an Epilogue.

Nicely done Duke. Certainly not what I was expecting! So are these specific experiences or a summation of some together?

It's funny, my daughter read these as well and literally has no idea what I'm getting at.

I don't normally write like this so it's pretty new to me; hopefully it's interesting enough to read.

Much of what's written is based off experience however it's impossible to tell what parts fit this description unless you're me. I'm really trying to blend fiction and non-fiction in a manner that keeps things a bit vague even to myself.

It sparks my imagination I find.

We're still very much in the beginning of this story, a long way to go still assuming I get to my perceived end (or beginning).

I'm on Dwoing's side, but that might be because i'm not a native speaker of the language :p

Writing is one thing, but making people read is a second. And in this case the way of writing makes people want to understand it imho.

Good jerb Duke, keep them chapters coming!

I'm actually really getting into this process and find I'm amazed by how dynamic it truly is. Chapters are pretty much writing themselves and take little to no time to draft.

All the time is spent in editing for continuity.

The one thing I've noticed is how quickly elements can become out of place.

For example, the next chapter is drafted but cannot be published until I swap around the two previous chapters. The chapters are written in a way that this can be done easily which I also find odd.

It would be nice to get some more feedback on this though. I'm not looking for accolades but am curious as to how this is being taken.

I know little P said it's wholly depressing, it's just too bad it took TS and a lot of b00ze to get that out of him.

It doesn't matter if you like it, hate it or simply just don't understand it. I'm just curious as to how it's being perceived.

One of my life ambitions is to write a full-length novel, probably a fiction novel. I have many ideas but it is tough and you're right, continuity is one of the tougher things.

It is really hard to comment on something I don't understand. It's like those essays you got in high school and you didn't really get it, and then the teacher calls on you and you're looking around like what? Who me?

Taken at face value, it seems to be a darker part of the story at least. But it's hard for me to even take the story and relate them to something that actually happened, a real life event. It might be too abstract, at least for my taste. I have no problem with metaphors and whatnot, but perhaps there is a line, where it is detached too much from an event?

A short example of my own... one of the ideas for a novel I'd love to write... I thought it would be cool to take basically the entire history of what occurred during the Napoleonic Era and transpose it into a science fiction setting. Many would see the similarities, and perhaps I don't want it to be exact, or else it might be Napoleon, only with spaceships. But at the same time, I don't want it to be so vague that the similarity is lost.

Only my opinion though.

It is definitely abstract and I knew this would be an issue.

I've actually taken inspiration from Identity a bit on this one because that movie had me confused for a full 30 minutes but was interesting enough to keep invested in.

I remember my daughter and I starting blankly at each other when Ray Liotta put on his jacked to cover up a small, round, blood stain on his shirt. It was completely out of place and had no context whatsoever but was absolutely interesting.

If you've never seen Identity I'd strongly recommend it. It simply questions the mental capacity of a serial killer and who he is as a person.

My story isn't purposely written dark even though I initially felt it was. The subject matter in itself is dark and there isn't any light coming that I can see.

I can brighten it up but it will be out of place and won't fit, of this I'm sure.

What I don't want to do is write the story, I only want to tell it. To me there's a difference as the story already exists, I'm just bringing it to light.

I can say though that most of what's in the story already has actually happened.

I'll likely add some more insight into what's actually happening but in all honesty, it's already there but has gone largely unnoticed.

...which I like.

The only thing is I can't keep the reader guessing forever otherwise they'll get bored and move on.

...assuming they haven't already :icon_confused:

I loved Identity, I've seen it a least five times over the years, it really is a great film.

As for this writing lark, it's way over my head, but then I mostly read stories that start with "Once upon a time" and "And they all lived happily ever after" so who am I to comment. Hence why I probably only did on TS that time, I didn't want it to sound harsh or a misunderstood criticism in the forum :p

Actually the criticism is ok.

I've been told numerous times by many that I should be writing but it's something I've never really done. I've written short stories and such over my lifetime but never tackled a subject which is what I'm doing this time around.

A Gamers Life is all about 1 core subject but will hopefully go much farther than that. There is actually a very long way to go yet if I'm to realize the story I want to tell.

It is all there, it just needs to be transposed.

I'm just more interested in learning whether or not I can direct an audience to feel a certain way while keeping them entertained.

This information is paramount in whether or not I tackle a real writing project of a subject matter I've been working on for close to a decade.

This one is a much more optimistic story taking tragedy and making it even more tragic or making it seem noble, depending on the audience.

The problem with this other story is it's a full book, real chapters, real locations and a boat load of research required. I figure I'd need at least 1 research helper, 1 or 2 doctors, a shrink, a few historians, and an editor.
