Building a new PC

When you get it all put together, do you think you could run a benchmark of sorts?

I would really like to see your numbers from the 6 core in direct relation to my older 6 core. Actually, it probably would help me determine whether to upgrade or not.

No problem Kitlope, will do. What kind of benchmarks would you like to see?

Regarding the GTX 970; i've been reading about a lot of people complaining about coil whine when the card is under load. Not just the GTX 970, but also other new generation cards. Anyone have experience with this?

What's your target resolution/performance? 1080p @ 60 FPS?

Considered watercooling the CPU?
Sorry JK, I must have missed your post.
My resolution is 1080p, but I do not really have a target performance. Just want to be able to play games at a decent quality and be done for the next few years.

Cooling wise a fan-based system should be enough for me. I'm not planning to overclock and with a proper cooler the temperature and noise can be kept at a low level.

Hi Wappy,

I read about the coil whine too. According to what I read back then it only affected the first batch (or so) of cards and no problems since.

I had to wait for the third batch from Gigabyte before I got mine, and I certainly do not have any coil whine even when I was overclocking it.

So you should not have a problem at all in my opinion :)

The card itself is near silent in my system, it's so under-stressed (is that a word? It is now) that the fans don't go mental.

Even when I had them running at 100% to test how far I could push it, the card was quieter than my Windforce (dual fan) 650Ti Boost.

Cinebench R15. It's a cpu test, does OpenGL too but we'll ignore that.

Download it here: http://www.maxon.net/en/products/cinebench/overview.html

Discussion & Comparison thread over at Overclock.net using Cinebench: http://www.overclock.net/t/1431032/top-cinebench-r15-cpu-scores

Run it using all cores then go into file--->preferences and change the renderer to 1 core, I would like to see what just a single core does too. Keep in mind I have the PC overclocked to 3.72 from the stock 3.33... so it's pretty mild. I would change it back to factory settings but I'm lazy and don't want to possibly screw it up when setting it back to 3.72 (as I've done in the past).

My numbers:

All Cores: 859 cb
Single core: 114 cb

Thanks Wappy!

Kitty

10 is a way off yet anyway so I wouldn't worry to much. If you can upgrade to 8 on the cheap then it's worth it. 8.1 is definitely superior to 7.
Actually I can get a Windows 10 beta for free via my student CIS program. I am very curious to try it out so I may just do that.

I can also grab 8.1 for free thanks to the student program as well, and am thinking of upgrading to 8.1. Is it pretty simple to upgrade? I'm not sure of the process.

I'd only install Windows 10 if you want to fiddle around with it. I wouldn't install it on your main/gaming machine as the current Windows 10 version is just a preview build. Finding drivers that work properly will most like also be a problem.

If you want to stay safe go with Windows 8.1. Are you upgrading from Windows 7?

Yes. I just worry about the actual process, as well as any programs I have that would need to be reinstalled or whatever due to an OS change. Not even sure how that works.

Finally sat down and ordered all the parts. Received everything today, except for one SSD. The only changes i've made are Crucial MX200 SSD's instead of the M550 as they weren't available anymore, and a 4 TB Seagate as the failure rate of the 3 TB seems kinda high.

Final setup:
CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K
Motherboard: MSI X99S GAMING 7
Videocard: MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4GB
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport BLS2C8G4D240FSA (16 GB DDR4)
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-U12S
SSD OS: Crucial MX200 250GB
SSD games: Crucial MX200 500GB
Hard drive storage: Seagate ST4000DM000 4TB
PSU: Sea Sonic X-650 v2
