How exactly does the current one function? Is it as useless as the article states?

I never use the current rose as I don't find it very practical. To bring it up you need to hold Q for a moment and then select the right command.

What does work quite well though is just tapping Q to voice your commands. Just point at something and tap Q does the job mostly. For instance: when pointing at a flag (and pressing Q) will tell your squadmates to attack that position and mark it for them, when pointing at an enemy it will spot the target for everyone, when pointing at a support player will ask him to give you ammo, when pointing at a vehicle will ask to get a lift. Works pretty fast a nicely.

Hmmm... that sounds efficient enough as it is, it will be interesting to see if the new commo is better of even necessary.
