DaveyFromtheNavy 2019 Rookie Season

HI guys, I know I'm not around much anymore. Have a lot going on with work, my small business and real life racing it's hard to find time to get down to gaming but figured I'd share how our rookie season went in the Late Model.

About a year ago I got a call from someone I knew long ago when I was racing karts from 2003-2007 and they watched me grow as a driver. This person was a car owner in the Busch North series, fielded many late models back in the day and had some local legends driving for him about 20 years ago, a few years ago he purchased a late model stock car for someone who is like a son for him but he wasn't interested in racing anymore. Around last Thanksgiving is when he called me.

The car used to be an old Pro Stock late model that raced at Thompson speedway and various New England race tracks and then sat for my guess is 15+ years. When I first saw the car it was in a tiny little Quonset hut surrounded by stuff, years of filth and dust it was quite a mess. The whole car needed to be gone through with many chassis changes needed to be made in order to race as a Late Model Sportsman. We converted the car from coilover suspension to Big spring with separate shock mounts, stuffed a brand new chevy crate engine in (602) with a 4 barrell Holly 650 carb. I fabricated new seat mounts and rewired the entire car (not much to it) and tried our best for some rookies to get it handling for the upcoming season. All this work being done in just a few short months.

Here is what she looked like before we started. It was quite a site, with absolutely zero room to work around there was a lot of cleaning to do.

Got the old engine out with a front end loader tractor, we felt a little bit redneck that night

Started fabrication for my new seat that came, I bought an Ultra Shield Halo seat for a good price and was very impressed with the quality and comfort

Fabricated seat mounts for right behind the shoulders that will mount to the chassis

After a lot of test fits pulling the seat in and out to get the right height, angle and distance I welded the finish upper bracket into the car while I still had to work out the lower support

The bottom mount that was in the car looked a little scary with not the greatest welds so we made our own bracket.
Old mount

Scary welds, probably wouldn't have held up to a big impact

Put a solid bar in across the bottom at the correct angle for mounting flush against the bottom of the seat. A lot more stable and a lot more safe. Saftey is priority at over 100mph.

Here's the mount just tacked in incase we needed to cut and change the angle.

And then a package arrives

Followed by some more goodies, Holly 650cfm 4 barrel.

Time to start tackling the wiring situation. I reused some gauges that were in the car that bench tested fine but replaced all the wire and switches, faulty eletrical is unnecessary,
Made up a switch panel and powder coated it back.

The car in my shop with my buddies cummins and frame swapped f100

We struggled a lot getting the motor into position inside the car, trial and error with custom motor mounts was a big headache. Issues with oil pan clearance because of how low it sat compared the the built motor that was in the car. We had to bend up a custom skid plate with hard spacers so we wouldn't take the oil pan out during a race. Kind of scary but it came out great, don't have any pictures of that at the moment. Getting a 2 post lift installed in the shop this week which will save my back bigtime.
Here's everything slowly but surely coming together. We started this project in Feburary after I got back

So I have to redo a lot of what I did last night but here we go. Original thread got cut to bits so I'll try to get everything back in order.

Here is the finished seat in the car wrapped with a 5 point Simpson harness

Moving on it was time to fit the engine and transmission in. It was my first time setting up a hydraulic throw out bearing and getting it shimmed within a tenth on an inch on the input shaft of the transmission so that it is as close to the clutch fingers as possible without touching them. Too close and the clutch would engage without pedal input, not close enough and we wouldn't get full engagement of the clutch which could lead to issues. Had to mock up motor mounts because of the oil pan height difference which had me hang the motor higher in the car then what I would have liked but we had to make it work.

In the above picture you can also see the Coil Over Eliminators that we had to purchase to be legal. These use a 5'' spring with just a threaded rod, they are a pain in the ass to setup correctly and in the future I'll most likely weld in differrent mounts so we can bypass this type of setup but they worked for the season. Right behind them is the seperate shock mount I welded on since we couldn't run a coil over setup.

Don't have many pictures of the rear end setup but we are using a quick change rearend with some bars that I don't fully understand quite yet but we're getting there.

Anyways here's my girlfriend Meaghan cleaning the car, she was an instrumental role in the whole project, supporting me on the days where there was a lot of doubt that this would be possible. This was a huge task and without her it wouldn't have been completed.

Also big thanks to First Choice Tires for letting me come down and use their tire machines swapping over to some new rubbah.

Also I'm a dumbass and didn't see in the rulebook that we had to run 8'' rims and not the 10'' rims that we had, so like how it's supposed to be I did this twice.

Car is starting to come together getting closer and closer to racing season. Unfortunately we did miss the first two races of the year in May because of setbacks but we were able to get on track in June.

With everything pretty much in place it was time for the engine break in, set timing and valve lash and get it ready for the racetrack. Here's one of the happiest nights where we fired up the car for the first time and the dream really started to set in.

He is happier then he looks but here is my car owner Louie, without him and his love for racing this wouldn't have ever happened
.

And what a difference this thing looks like outside, when you can't get a far enough view of the car for months on end you forget what the big picture looks like. Rolling it outside and getting it on the hauler was one of the best things I have ever seen.
Here is a before and after. From the first moment I saw the car until we we're just about done with it and hopefully didn't forget about anything (but of course we did)

And in the next post, Broke Racing Team hits the racetrack.

Our first race was a big learning experience. We ran decent, we were way overweight with a penalty because we are running a steering rack and not a conventional box type, but track officials thought we were running a built motor and not a crate engine, which led to us being 300+ pounds heavier then the competition, Sucks we ran most of the year like that until the last race when they let us drop some poundage.
I think we finished 8th our first race and all year long staying consistently in the top 10 of an average on 15-18 car count. We didn't have one DNF or get lapped once all year, which despite our competition being really friggen good I was shocked we stayed on the lead lap in all of our races.

My Dad and I trying to cool off and check over our shock distances to see how far they are traveling. It was really really hot every Sunday.

My Car owner and I

My girlfriend Meg and I after my first race. We we're all thrilled, had fun, didn't come in last and the car was in one piece. All we could ever ask for.

And onto Week 2..

So that thing that I forgot to do before we went racing was apparently really fucking important and just simply overlooked.

The exhaust headers are called up and overs, they come up rather then shoot down to meet to a merge collector. They also travel right behind the HEI Ignition, which is made of plastic. So that first race we melted a 5'' hole in the back of the distributor and we had no friggen idea. The 2nd race our car was making some weird noises (Pr-detonation) and we were kinda stumped as to why. We tried bandading with fuel mixture and that wasn't working obviously because we had friend the module inside the ignition. Somehow the car ran and like idiots we raced. Someone stayed on the lead lap being down 2 cylinders and ignition going crazy.

We were down 2 cylinders because my car owners engine guy came to reset the valve lash and set two exhaust valves too tight, causing them to stay open and therefor two cylinders were getting 0psi compression. I about shit myself when I got out the compression gauge and thought we had blown a fresh engine.

Nope just dumb. We put a new ignition in, reset valve lash and made a heatshield to wrap around the ignition to keep from melting some more shit.

Luckily these were our worst problems of the year and I'm glad we got them out of the way early.

I still even passed two guys that race on 5 cylinders sounding like a detuned Volvo station wagon that day.

Here's my Dad on the right and Louie on the left probably talking about how hot it is

Fuck Yeah!!!!! So happy for you man! Looking forward to the rest.
Thanks man! It's been a hell of a year.

Also I've been looking for you, I just started playing MX Sim and about two weeks into it I can finally land a whip 1/10 of the time. Looking for people to ride with!

Here's some video from this year as-well.
First one is interview the track gave us and they put an onboard camera in our car. We kinda sucked that week but we stayed out of trouble and finished the race.

This one is the last race of the year. We gave the car a weight watches diet, ditched about 280 pounds of lead and it really livened her up. Had fun competing for some spots and trying to stay mindful of the points for the championship contenders. We finished the season 8th in Points out of 20 something entries. I've done some work this offseason with a lot more to do to check off some goals for 2020. We want a win, bad. And if we can compete for the championship.

The last race we had a lot of people watching us that came to help or just watch the race which was really awesome. Reminded me of my early racing days when family and friends would drive way out to the woods to come watch me race a go-kart around some little track. Stage is definitely a bit bigger here and we did our best. I had some awesome help all year long in the pits which was huge, there is a ton of things to do and remember before each time the car goes on track. Luckily we only forgot to fuel once lol.

My awesome parents who we're just about as shocked as I was the day I told them that someone called me to drive their racecar.

And me mum

And then at the end of the year we were given a little surprise
Rookie Of The Year Honors.

It's been a wild ride this year guys and just know I haven't forgotten about where I came from. You guys have been there since the start of my iRacing career where I was learning the ropes to being where I am now, still forgetting to put fuel in the car. For those who know my story and what we've gone through in the past 5 years it means the absolute world to me that someone would give me the chance to prove myself and what I can do and I couldn't have done it without the high hopes and positivity B2O has brought to my life, you guys were there through some tough personal battles and I'm grateful to have you guys as my friends. I can't wait for the 2020 season just around the corner and I'll do my best to keep you guys updated weekly with results and some videos once I get a new gopro.

Dude this is f'in awesome! The further i got into the thread the more my face started hurting from smiling.

This is the only time i feel bad about ditching my FB, Daunt just told me you did regular updates on there.

Also, the only thing that car is lacking is a "Kenadian B2O Bobble Head figurine" on the dash.

That's a truly terrific summary @Fromthenavy and I thank you for sharing it with us!

It's been equally awe inspiring watching you develop from just a pleb to a semi-professional pleb.

BTW, we have a Digital Printing Department at my work. I may be able to fabricate some decals if you're interested?

Amazing Davy! I hope you get that win or even get a shot at the championship. I know you can do it and you deserve it after all that hard work. Whenever you get that GoPro, put the Youtube links here on B2O forum please. I would love to watch your races with an onboard camera.

I haven't played MX Sim for a while now. Kind of had my fill I guess for a bit. I was into it pretty heavy for a while. I ran the amateur SX and MX seasons on Race Factory riding for TM Factory MX team. I guess I got burned out. Last year I purchased a key for MX Bikes. I liked the game but I just like sim auto racing more at the moment. Here is the website for MX Bikes in case you're curious.

Have you been watching the World Series of Asphalt at all this week? Pro Late Model has been pretty crazy for the first two races. It has been my first time watching Florida type modifieds. I've enjoyed them so far. Last night they had the Tour type modifieds and ARCA Menards Series East Season Opener which was decent. Its my first time really watching a lot of this short track stuff. I find it all more entertaining than any of the premier NASCAR series that race on the bigger tracks. All of this short track is making me want to drive the iRacing Super Lates and Late Model series.

2021 UPDATE
Hello everyone!

Our 2020 season went pretty well and I'll have some time this week to compile some videos together of what onboard footage I have and some other videos from the stands that were taken at the track.
First race of the year we got a podium position (best for the year) and rounded out the season finishing 7th in points after a wacky start with Covid delaying the season.

But onto 2021, I won't be able to run a full schedule with our late model because of a career change and relocating from New Hampshire to North Carolina. In February a friend of mine that runs Tour Modifieds asked for my help at Speed weeks at New Smyrna Speedway down in Florida, we ran a couple nights only because he was in Daytona working as Front Suspension Tech for Trackhouse racing on the #99 car in Nascar. Being around racing I had sent an email about working with a GT3 team I had helped out last year at COTA in GT World Challenge America. A few emails later and I had an invite to work with them at Sonoma and that turned into a full time opportunity at their shop in North Carolina. I went home, left my job, packed my stuff and my father and I headed to NC to move into my apartment.

Starting this season I'll be working on the #04 Car with Colin Braun and George Kurtz in GTWC for DXDT Racing. Mostly my main duties are taking care of tires at the track, going over the wall as a tire carrier for pit stops and I'll be doing a lot of work with Carbon Repair. Very excited for this new change of pace, it's very very hard as a driver to walk away from racing on my own but my day job was not cutting it anymore on the happiness factor and there are far more opportunities down in this area to be involved with racing. We had a pretty good showing at Sonoma with a class win, and some GT America wins as well.

You'll see me around the 2:36 mark chuckin tires on
