Re: What do you think of Close Quarters?

I think we're tied into the BF3 Server for a few months yet but if the price is right, I'm willing to discuss alternatives when the time is up.

This of course assumes I don't have to pay more than I already do; I'm already in about $150 USD/month between Webserver and Gameserver.

Re: What do you think of Close Quarters?

I doubt it.

You have to host server files somewhere and there has to be a rig capable of dealing with the immense resources that the ArmA2 Engine requires. ArmA Servers are also typically laggy so you need someone who's wired to a decent backbone likely with a fair amount of available bandwidth.

I can try setting up a Server on my old gaming rig but I just don't think I have the pipeline to accommodate all ArmA2 will need, not sure?

I found a 14 Player Server that costs $59.00 USD/month at JestServers:

...adding more slots is typically in the $1.25 - $1.50/slot area (game dependent) however I've seen some providers charge over $2.00/ additional slot.

Our current server provider for BF3 would cost approx. $60.00 USD/month for a 16 Player ArmA2 Server however DayZ isn't mentioned so I'm not sure if we could even run a mod there; we'd have to ask?

What we need though is the Community to rally around the game and help fill the server, possibly entice newbies to register here. Spending the money is not an issue if the server sees activity but throwing it away on a dead server is more than I can bear.

Re: What do you think of Close Quarters?

Actually I just looked at DayZ Forums and the specs for a Host are immense. In some cases, servers are eating up over 2TB of bandwidth/month :icon_eek:

...my ISP would freeze my account after the second day of hosting.

Below is a rough list of requirements to have a comfortable 50 player server:

  • Quad Core CPU @ 3Ghz+ (CPU is the main enforcer in a ArmA server, so the more powerful the better)
  • 2GB+ Ram (Ram isn't a big issue in an ArmA server, so don't be overly concerned with having copious amounts [16GB+] of it as it won't be required)
  • 50GB+ HDD (Preferably SATA3 or SSD) (ArmA 2 CO and the DayZ Mod take up approx. 20GB)
  • Bandwidth at least 2TB a month. (As stated earlier, at least 2TB is required)

Hopefully the DayZ Mod Team finds a way to spawn zombies in proximity to the player rather than have them running around the landscape because my bet is that's what's responsible for this huge amount of resources.

ArmA2 always plays like butter until you allow the AI to make calculations, then it slows to a crawl.

Re: What do you think of Close Quarters?

Yeah i had a read late last night ....
I went there to find out if it was possible to set up a small home server ... i quickly stopped reading .
Seems , for now at least , a Day Z server is only possible for the filthy rich :p

Ps : Hijacking threads is fun :D :D

Re: What do you think of Close Quarters?

The other thing I've been considering over the past while is potentially going co-location on a Server I built.

The only thing we'd really be charged for is our bandwidth and rackspace but the computer would be free because it's owned by me. I'd bet however that a decent rig would cost a minimum of $2500 - $3000 and would have to ship with spare hardware such as hot swappable Hard Disk, additional RAM, additional VGA, and possibly some additional fans.

I may actually investigate this further if Fragtard ever pulls in enough people to warrant our own dedicated box.

I can help out a bit with the server expenses if and when this gets of the ground .
I would love to have a Day-Z server i could call "our own" .
That would also mean less hassle looking for one to join .

This would be excellent!

@Duke: Apparently all zombie behaviour is handled on the clients box and then sent as coordinates to the server. Supposedly there is a lot of things handled P2P via the master server. But yeah, it is still stupidly heavy. I hope that arma3 will be a little easier on the netcode.
