Ken likes to joke that I'm a teaching, and while that's not entirely true now (I did teach history at California State University San Marcos for two semesters), I am nevertheless a history buff. Makes since because I hold a BA in History and I'm working on my Master's in History. Anywho...when iRacing released the Audi GTO two weeks ago there was a mention of a Del Mar track in the video. Here in San Diego the Del Mar Fairgrounds and the Del Mar Race Track is rather famous. What I didn't know until I started researching the track is that IMSA ran at Del Mar from 1987-1992 they ran at Del Mar. While watching the race below they spent nearly a solid lap in-car with one of the drivers. I was rather astonished when I did in fact recognize the main entrance to the Fairgrounds. So I did a little more hunting and found a second video from 1991 that actually showed the layout, which only confirmed the layout I had put together in my head from watching the first video. Below is a quick mash up of the area in which they raced on top of what is there today (courtesy of Google maps).
Long story short, this stuff is super interesting to me and I thought I would share. Kind of cool learning that a place I have visited since I was a kid was once a race track for a car that I can now drive in iRacing. The other cool part is about the preservation of automotive history through the use of games (such as iRacing) to preserve these historic cars for future generations to immerse themselves into thereby bringing history to life; but I won't go on too long about that.
