Wow, that's some intense detail. The thing driving on it looks like it accidentally tripped and fell into a car crusher at some point in its life.

That's simple, when your on dirt going sideways, it's really fun.

The following thoughts/explanation are merely musings semi-serious because I'm still figuring this four-wheeled thing out. All in jest. :)

I suppose because some find it so fun they decided they wanted to spend the most amount of time sideways they could. A circle or oval track achieves that pretty well. Then the left turn thing I guess is so they can focus on setting the car up really good to do one thing. Lastly, you have to counter steer when going sideways if you wish to continue going sideways.
