Discovery Scanners: Worth keeping mounted?

Is it worth the trouble to keep even a basic scanner mounted?
Eg. I have now moved into a Cobra 3, and have optimised for a cargo/combat loadout.
But this meant having to demount the Basic scanner. So I am not discovering/scanning anything...

I think if you've not ventured very far (I think you mentioned in another thread you've not jumped more than 6 hops away?) and aren't planning to it's a waste of a slot...

I only put the exploring kit on my ship when I had enough for an Asp and went on a trip to a black hole. It's worth it then of course :) The basic disco scanner doesn't really do much anyway. When you can get an advanced disco scanner and a surface scanner then the real worth reveals itself. And it's very relaxing to scan entire systems with Coldplay/Daft Punk/your choice of chilled out music playing in the background ;)

Thanks Starfighters!
Looks like I made the right decision then.
I have actually jumped quite a few systems now.
Hanging out in the Aritimi System now.
Did a bit of light trading in order to get out and see how that works.
Not much profit; but worth the trouble...took a Trade mission which paid off a few extra creds as well.
PS. My speakers tend to play tunes like this:

Basic one is awful. Either get rid of it or replace it with an advanced one.

If you're in a ship that isn't doing much moving about... and you're trading I'd agree with earlier comments - cargo rack is better :)

Tex, have you tried running the rare trading route yet? It's decent cash and gets you out and about in the galaxy- and a Cobra is the perfect ship for it.

I am venturing into it over the next few days as time allows.
I DID find this very handy though:

And have been blending using that with side-visits to Nav Beacons (Bounties).
I have been expanding my "frame of reference" a bit each day.
STARTING to feel ready to move beyond this "tutorial phase" lol.

You can make more in bounties in Resource Extraction Sites. High and even Hazardous are fine as long as you aren't carrying any cargo and you are careful of what you engage. Poaching bounties from the local security forces is good too.

If you haven't seen it yet, this is the famous rare trading route (note: make sure you have a fuel scoop!)

Rares trading was exactly what I did in my Adder to get to a Type 6. From there it was Type 7 from trading in a T-6 up to trying out a Python and deciding on going for an Imperial Clipper (back when it was actually hard to get one due to the ranking up process).

I am even finding the short-route regular trades to be lucrative; but obviously not AS lucrative.
I am a little confused on the rare items though:
Eg. I am at Gilya at present. And cannot see the Gilya Special Weapons listed.
Do rares only spawn every once in a while?

That chart doesn't show all of the rares in the game. The two sides of the chart are different clusters of systems that have rares. For example start buying at Zaonce over to Uszaa, then jog the ~190ly to Witchhaul, sell everything and start buying again until you hit Pantazis (or wherever you want to stop). Then jog back to Zaonce and repeat.

The lightly shaded parts are optional.

Tex, rare's are on a common market spawn, so everyone could be trying to get them as well. I've run into "out of stock" several times when looking for them. If they weren't that rare, everyone with larger trading vessels would run them for even more profit.

Did they change something? As far as I knew everyone gets an allotted portion. Then it resets after a while.

Thanks all!
Another question: When I am ready (close now) to jumping into the MMO aspect: Is there anything one should avoid when just traveling around and trading or fighting NPC bad guys?
