Elite: Dangerous Power Play

No we aren't talking about hockey you damn canucks. The newest upcoming update for ED! This will provide necessary boosts for mining, as well as some addition gameplay changes:

We've already talked about the new drones for scooping cargo and sharing fuel, but this week Mike went into some of the other new advantages for miners. The hardhat and pickaxe players out there have had to work hard for their credits in the past, so for Powerplay we're making your lives a little more interesting.

The new Prospector Drone can be fired to do your scanning for you; it'll investigate an asteroid and return data on its metal and mineral composition. Combine them with a big ship and a stack of Collection Drones, and you'll tear through asteroid belts at speed.

After Powerplay launches, mining will become a more viable route to riches, espcially with two new minerals – painite and osmium – and more minerals per extraction site. But we think mining should be a game of risk and reward, so you'll find high and low intensity extraction sites in human-occupied space, but with pirates swarming the high intensity areas you'll face greater danger... and greater rewards.

And finally, we'd like to thank everyone from the community helping us test Elite: Dangerous for Mac right now.

In a few weeks we'll be deploying a special PC beta build to test Mac/PC crossplay. Cooperate or compete, it's your choice and your chance to settle the Mac versus PC debate once and for all. Well, once, at least.

Looks like finally we can help friends out when they're idiot selves hit E in space! Now if we can start charging to be a tanker service! :D

As a signoff, here's something awesome:

Hmmn I wonder if I've been wasting my time in Group Play searching for Rich Resources?

The update above specifically mentions "Human occupied space".

No, human occupied simply means it has some sort of government/faction.
So you can go in either solo, group or open play and the yields should be the same.

And seeing every now and then newly explored systems get a station, the list with high intensity res sites will increase.

As someone that does a lot of bounty hunting I'm looking forward to less security and more pirates to pew pew pew with the ol' plasma accelerator.

I think missions and the mission system needs a pretty big overhaul and the few changes they listed are a decent step in the right direction. Having to chase down and pull targets out of FSD is pretty nice.

I'd like to see though, long range scanning options, like the ability to detect frame shifts, ships and other objects at longer distances, things like that. There's no reason that a ship's sensors can't detect certain things, especially celestial objects and all.

If you upgrade your ships scanners you can pick up all Planetary bodies within any one system in only one scan.

It's a must for anyone looking to Explore.

It however is not powerful enough to give you complete data on anything other than what's currently targeted and is dependent on proximity.

Right, you need to equip a Detailed Surface Scanner that works independently of your disco scanner. Like Duke said - an Advanced Disco Scanner is a necessity for explorers.

Ah. Doing exploration was on my to do list but hadn't gotten around to it yet. Good to know, thanks.

I haven't played much in the past week but up until that point I was still putting in 4 - 6 hours/week minimum.

I'm in love with this game and have found a decent system for continual income during Exploring. Its not huge dollars but its enough to make it satisfying.

I've also found a way to keep Exploring from becoming boring (which it can rather quickly) and was hoping to chronicle my journey through space.

Right now it's all hinging on whether or not I can get my Elgato HD to capture because DXTory, Fraps and XSplit don't really allow ED to record as fluidly as I'd like.

Have you found anything noteworthy? Any special / really awesome systems?

It's hard to say because I'm really mixing things up a lot so every system holds something different.

I've been interdicting a fair amount which has yielded some rather lucrative bounties as well as some not worth the wasted ammo.

Recently I interdicted an Anaconda (I was on a hot streak and getting cocky), got lit up, crashed into him sheilds down on a quick strafing run and exploded on impact.

That stupidity cost me close to 300,000 credits of exploration data.

If I run across unidentified signal sources I'll sometimes jump out of Supercruise to find shrapnel and maybe a ship or two to all out warfare; it's amazingly diverse.

One of the very last systems I visited had a red dwarf star eclipsing a much larger star and was one of the most beautiful sights I've seen ingame yet.

I won't lie to you, exploration is work and you sometimes have to travel to the other side of a System to get uninteresting data. Having said that if you mix things up it can be quite diverse, interesting and at times, awe inspiringly beautiful.

I've said before, I'm a big astronomy nerd, so I'd do it just to be able to see / discover all the different celestial objects, not necessarily for money. Black holes, wolf rayet stars, neutron stars, binary and trinary systems, that kind of thing.

Some people I've read have discovered some pretty crazy systems that make for awesome finds.

Theres some really cool stuff to come across, 2 things I clearly remember was a system with 7 stars orbiting eachother (also close enough to be visible from the cockpit), and another system I came across, that had several stars in the system, with two of the stars having rings. That was quite a cool sight. Also came a cross a 96 star/planet/moon system once.

I think this Power Play update is a lot bigger than I thought... they're talking about minor player-run factions, and aligning to major powers for awesome benefits, missions and more.

These powers have their own ethos and methods. How they take control of systems varies depending on whether they favour warlike or more pacifist methods. Some will conquer systems with economics, others by just sending in the troops. Either way, you can be part of that.

Combat-focused players may choose to side with warlike Powers for combat missions and perks, while trade-focused players may prefer to side with a Power looking to expand their trade monopoly.

Now we will see a much more liquid, living and breathing galaxy that has ever changing borders, empires and more:

In the Powerplay update you'll find a new tab on the galaxy map, displaying the current state of galactic control among all the Powers.

"We've had to add a lot to the galaxy map," User Interface Head Jon Pace says. "Powerplay is like a massive strategy boardgame, but our conflicts play out in three dimensions, and we have to make that readable for players. You can see all their borders, what kinds of systems they control, who their neighbours and enemies are, and how the map changes every week as the Powers make their moves.
It really looks like this is a big part in expanding the gameplay, while also providing some major background and life into the game.

Including two new ships for players to get a hold of:

Lakon Diamondback

Imperial Courier

On a sidenote, really lame they're adding all these cool imperial ships and still the federation has only a stupid dropship... hopefully the federal corvette will come soon....

Got my e-mail update this morning and was excited to read about the changes coming. It'll be interesting to see how the Factions work out though because I wasn't intending on aligning with anyone, at least not over the short term.

I'm excited about the usage of drones though as well as changes to mining as that's my focus right now. This is the reason I'm exploring the Galaxy so I can map out the Pristine Mining Opportunities and give mining a real chance.

I finally got my Game Capture HD to work last night as it's not been recording audio and I'm impressed so far with the results. I can now fluidly record Elite: Dangerous Gameplay without any performance drop so look for some YouTube Vids on the Horizon :)

I'd love to see rare ore spots pop up in extremely uncommon places. Having to explore a lot of systems to find deposits that last only a few days would be a pretty cool aspect of mining I think. And by rare I mean VERY had to find, but can provide a BIG profit.

I want to want that Courier, but man, that Diamondback is ugly-sexy. I hope it's not primarily a trader.

Ah that might help with the bugged ranking! I can just aim for the courier instead of working my ass off for the baron rank and buy a clipper.
Done over 10 missions just for that rank alone...and it never progresses.

The powerplay update looks promising and in particular for you Duke.
With the implementation of the drones you should save so much time scooping the stuff that you could probably increase your earnings by 30% in the same amount of time.

Ooh Im looking very much forward to the drones and the Imperial Courier (Wonder If I can get that in Red?)

Also like the idea of working even more for the Empire! :D

(ps I heard people doing 80+ courier missions for the last rank of Earl alone..not sure how many it took me but i feelt like i was traped in the Cobra for weeks)
