Elite: Dangerous Steam keys coming for existing customers

Super Mod
Hi everyone,

Some breaking news for you:

We’ll soon be offering Steam keys to anyone who bought Elite: Dangerous from the EliteDangerous.com store who would like a key, and to anyone who buys the game from our store in the future.

We always appreciate it when you buy direct from our store because it means we can put more into supporting and developing Elite: Dangerous, but we know a number of long-time players and backers like to play through Steam and we think it’s fair everyone has that option, not just new players.

Elite: Dangerous runs on Frontier’s servers, so we’ve been working with Valve to give you a way to seamlessly connect your Steam and existing Frontier accounts in a way that’s easy. It’s coming soon. From May 28 you’ll be able to generate a Steam key from your account page, and we’ll have full instructions right here on the forums closer to the time.

The team really has been working hard on this one, and we’re all super happy to finally have an answer for you. Thanks for bearing with us and thanks for playing, as always.

Edit: This applies to Kickstarter backers, too.

I have no idea where I actually purchased Elite: Dangerous from lol.

...hopefully there Web Store.

I for one would love to know how many hours I've put into this game.

I have to imagine you did. I know I did. That is cool though! Try and post the instructions in a few weeks here when they post em.

Greetings Commanders

All EliteDangerous.com store players can now generate a Steam key to add it to their Steam library.

By generating a Steam key all future purchases made with your Frontier account will also be associated with your Steam account. This won't affect how much you pay for the game or for paint jobs, but sticking with the EliteDangerous.com store remains the best way to support ongoing development with 100 percent of your money on future purchases. We especially appreciate it when you buy direct from us, but we're happy for you to play how and where you like. Just enjoy the game, and fly safe Commanders!

Instructions to redeem:

Log into the Elite: Dangerous store.

Go to your account dashboard.

Click on ‘Partner Keys’

Click ‘Claim an Elite: Dangerous’ key.

You can redeem your code by selecting 'Games > Activate a Product On Steam' in the Steam UI.

Note: the key you generate will add Elite: Dangerous to any Steam library but WILL NOT grant access to the game without an existing registered Frontier account and copy of the game. For this reason, please don’t give your keys away to friends! They won’t be able to play without having already bought the game from Steam or the EliteDangerous.com store!

You'll have to sign in through Steam at the Elite: Dangerous Store before it will generate you a Steam Activation Key.

Instructions to redeem:

  1. Log into the Elite: Dangerous store.
  2. Go to your account dashboard.
  3. Click on ‘Partner Keys’
  4. Sign in through Steam. You will then be redirected to https://store.elitedangerous.com/frontier_partnerkeys/ stating "Your account is linked to Steam".
  5. Go back to My Account https://store.elitedangerous.com/frontier_partnerkeys/
  6. Click on "CLAIM A KEY FOR ELITE: DANGEROUS"

You can redeem your code by selecting 'Games > Activate a Product On Steam' in the Steam UI.

NOTE: The Store is experiencing heavy traffic and is down more than up right now.

Also, Steam will re-download the entire game and place it in your Steam/steamapps/common folder as it does with all games.

When you first launch the game through Steam, you'll have to login as usual through the Elite: Dangerous launcher you're used to however it will now e-mail you a verification code.

Once you enter the verification code Elite: Dangerous will launch as it did when you initially installed it on your system (non-Steam version).

This means that graphics adjustments may have reset but you'll have to confirm. Fortunately control mapping seems to be left in tact so you shouldn't experience any issues when launching now via Steam.

Personally I like the fact there's now a way to track time spent in this game.
