Euro Truck Simulator 2 Trailer Skinning

I've managed to get my first trailer skin into the game but need some help from you euro-pee-ons in regards to what "legals" need to be on the trailer as well as location if applicable.

I picked an easy skin the first time around, DFDS Logistics Services: http://www.dfds.com/

I'll post some screens sometime this weekend as I need to get scaling fixed and fill in some areas I missed.

@ Shilka, you and I should collaborate on a Trailer Skin Pack. We can post it on all the mod sites but have people come here for the download and any support they may require.

I think I'm going to have a hard time making skins in paint, as I have no photo editor at all at the moment...
Any tips on a decent free one that isn't too complex yet has enough possibilities?

And btw, have a link to a trailer skinning tutorial? (where the files are etc)

I can hook you up with a copy of Adobe Creative Suite 6 but it's not easy if you've never used it before.

From what I understand a lot of people use Gimp and seem to like it. I've never used it personally so I can't provide you with any insight into how it works and how difficult it is to use.

Gimp is a real good program, but when they easy to use its relative to your skill level in any photo editor or paint type application.

I'm not finished the skin yet because I need an idea of where the legals go but for the most part the logo and scaling is pretty accurate against the images I could find online.

Not too bad for a first attempt anyway:

very nice dude! I have no idea what you mean with 'legals' though...
btw, why is there a walking dead video in the quick reply box for me?

OK so I've spent exorbitant amounts of time trying to find a skin pack that looks good enough to use but there's always something wrong so I've resigned myself to soldiering on.

I ran into a roadblock in skinning the DFDS Trailer as I wasn't terribly happy with the quality of the skin. It looked especially bad close up on smaller decals.

Tonight, I upped the resolution of my Trailer Skin Template from the games standard 512 all the way up to 4096. The difference in skin quality is night and day but I still have to measure performance ingame.

Here are some screens of a new Trailer Skin I've been working on for LKW Walter, a Major Truck and Rail Freight Company based out of Austria (I believe):LKW-Walter-40960167.jpgLKW-Walter-40960111.jpgLKW-Walter-40960338.jpgLKW-Walter-40960461.jpgLKW-Walter-40960695.jpg

If anyone's still playing the game, I'm more than willing to put these up for download as more feedback can only help me improve.

What do you need to know about the legals?
I used to be a lorry driver so fire away.

I need to get an idea of all the decals and nameplates that are on the trailer either installed by the manufacturer or required by Law in Europe. That includes (but not limited to) GVW's, Unit#s, Trailer Placards, Warning Labels, Conspicuity Tape/Reflector Tape, etc.

Pictures with as much details would be ideal but so far is proving a bit hard to find.

I can get that for you, the company that drives around the DFDS trailers collects oilrig equipment here everyday :)

The reflective tape has been added to regulations just a couple of years ago and go along the outline of both sides of the trailer.
Also the trailer length marking is required by law *2 rectangular reflective plates.
I will dig around at home trying to find pictures of our old trailer and truck, i am sure there's pictures from the manufacturers id plate in there.
And also the danger markings (Dangerous goods e.g.) should be on it.

JULY 2011 - AMENDMENT TO CONTOUR MARKING LEGISLATION

Phase 1 - 10 October 2008
As of 10 October 2008, a new law has entered into force, also referred to as ‘Regulation 48’. This law stipulates that all new vehicles heavier than 7.5 tonnes must be fitted with retroreflective contour marking. New types of vehicles are considered to be vehicles for which manufacturers are requesting approval. This includes vehicle categories N2, N3, O3 and O4.
Phase 2 - 10 July 2011
The expansion of the law, phase 2, enters into force on 10 July 2011. From then on, not only are new types of vehicles included for which a manufacturer is requesting approval, but all new types of registered vehicles heavier than 7.5 tonnes. This expansion of the law also applies to vehicle categories N2, N3, O3 and O4.
N2: Vehicles used for the carriage of goods and having a maximum mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 12 tonnes.
N3: Vehicles used for the carriage of goods and having a maximum mass exceeding 12 tonnes.
O2: Trailers with a maximum mass exceeding 0.75 tonnes but not exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
O3: Trailers with a maximum mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 10 tonnes.
O4: Trailers with a maximum mass exceeding 10 tonnes.Contour or line marking?Regulation 48 also provides instructions for the marking method. The entire contour at the rear of the vehicle must be fitted with retroreflective tape. On the sides it is sufficient to cover the corners at the top and the line at the bottom (covering at least 80% of the length).The colours of the contour marking are also laid down in Regulation 48: yellow or red at the rear; yellow or white on the sides.

De advantages*

  • Improved visibility of the vehicle, both moving and stationary;
  • Improved estimation of distance and speed;
  • Probability of side-impact accidents 37% less;
  • Number of rear-end collisions 41% less;
  • Optical improvement of the vehicle.

* source: NHTSA results of the study by the Transport Safety Board
Minimum requirements for maximum safety
Rear
Over width:

  • Entire contour and as close as possible to the edge of the vehicle.
  • The cumulative length of the marking must at least be 80% of the total width (rear) of the vehicle.
  • Reflective logos or text at the rear are not permitted.

Sides

  • For the sides, at least a single line must be fitted at the bottom, covering 80% of the overall length, excluding any horizontal overlaps.
  • For motor vehicles this length must at least be 80% of the length of the vehicle, excluding the cabin.
  • If the vehicle’s length is more than 6 metres, the corners at the top must also be marked.
  • The marking is fitted as closely as possible to the edges of the vehicle and stops at less than 600
  • millimetres from each edge of the vehicle (or the cabin for trailer tractor units).
Height
Bottom:

  • The marking must be fitted as low as possible within the range:
  • Minimum: 0.25 metres above the road surface
  • Maximum: 1.50 metres above the road surface
A fitting height of 2.10 metres is accepted if it is technically impossible to stay within 1.50

Top:

  • As high as possible, at least within 0,40 meters from the top of the vehicle.

Great info guys, thanks. All the Hazardous Goods stuff is already in the game so I won't need that as it's controlled by the trailer and associated cargo. Although, I may look a bit closer at them later to see if perhaps up-rezzing is an option (which it probably is).

The question I have is about conspicuity/reflective tape, why don't I see it in any pictures I find online for companies such as TNT, DFDS, DFW, P&O Ferrymasters, etc.? Is it colored similar to the way it is in North America and difficult to actually see unless lit at night?

The stuff we use is red, white, yellow and blue I believe. You can also get combinations of colors such as red & white and blue & white; afaik yellow is all on it's own. p72.jpgPP_P0908707.jpgcpx2-66-redblue.jpg

Yes, here they use the same red white and yellow and sometimes it's hard to notice during the day. Blue isn't allowed in the netherlands as it's reserved for emergency services (and in some other countries green is reserved for that same reason).
Normal useage is red on the back combined with white on the side, or yellow all around.
Reflective brand names/advertising is allowed too, but then the side contour reflection needs to be full and it isn't allowed to use corner markers only at the top.
