Factorio

I just found out about this amazingly fun game.

"Factorio is a game in which you build and maintain factories.

You will be mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, automating production and fighting enemies. Use your imagination to design your factory, combine simple elements into ingenious structures, apply management skills to keep it working and finally protect it from the creatures who don't really like you."

It's still in development, but they have a demo up which can be grabbed from their site. It's even going to have multiplayer!

This looks very cool, I've downloaded it and enjoying it a lot so far (level 3 in the tutorial or something). It looks a little bit like Minecraft, but without all the nonsense, and there seems to be a lot of strategy involved.

Yeah it's a great game. And they have made it much better over the past years.

We should do some coop multiplayer Factorio? I've never done that before but it should work pretty smoothly these days.

I hear if players join with far ping as more 100ms, factorio server can pretty lag.

but we alredy try with a friend to play coop (should be open p2p connection). was fun... before beetles had eaten us :D

post about some tiny good mods.

Warehousing - biggest chest's (include logic chest's)

Speed Buttons - time warps (I shared zip to google drive coz cant find original source, many similar mods doesnt work)

Eco Trees - trees that absorb 10x more pollution around your factory

and adding to previous - TreeSaplings - mod adds saplings that grow into vanilla trees, recipes for saplings, and a technology to unlock them

how to install: drop zip files into C:\Users\*you*\AppData\Roaming\Factorio\mods, do not unzip

I lost a weekend to this game. Its fun by yourself but I had a more interesting time when playing co-op. Not tried the mods yet, we added one but it crashed the server over and over.

I'm quite enjoying figuring out the complexity you find in Bob's mods.

It adds new minerals to mine, gasses and a lot of other new stuff. In addition to that, it makes the whole production chain many times more complex. Also, pretty much every building in it has multiple levels of upgrades.

I think my whole circular material supply system ran a bit out of hand...
It kind of looks good on the map though :D

Seeing all those tracks reminds me of good ol transport tycoon deluxe :)

Which is still available for free as OpenTTD btw.

Wow, that is one huge factory now :). Must have been a lot of work, but it looks pretty effective now in throughput.

You could compress the lines a bit more, leaving no tiles empty between them. Then you would have to use underground belts next to the one you are carrying into the factory.

I didn't know you could carry fluids in pipes that far without losing pressure. I guess you can if you don't have problems with it.

Oh man I haven't played this game for at least a year now. I got an email recently with my steam code maybe I'll have to get sucked back into it again.

I do like the spacing though, I know it is horribly space inefficient, but it makes feeding off, and back onto them very easy.

The (crude) oil has no problems with the long pipes, as the oil pumps will keep pumping untill the entire pipeline system is up to full pressure.

With water, I'm not so sure since they have a limited pump capacity, but whenever I feel a factory isn't getting enough water I just put a pump at the factory to suck the water out of the pipeline. And I have I think 4 water pumps hooked up to the main water system.

I did have a problem in the end with how effective the throughput can be. When I started up the final factories, making the inflow for the rocket parts, basicly every factory along the line started working all at once, and I got some power failure, which cascaded as my coal mining is very far away and suffered from black outs, causing even less power to be produced, and I got left with just 15% of the original power availability. I quickly built another steam engine facility, and hooked up a new coal site, with it's own solar power source, and that way I managed to pump enough coal back in to get things going again.

I launched the rocket with the sattelite, so basicly I beat the game with belts only now :) I'm still playing on it though, I can use it as a learning level for the other features, or perhaps I'll just build a couple more rockets, or aggro some large clusters of enemies to test my defenses :p

Anyway, this game id great fun!

Looks like someone has found a new addiction :p

Gotta have to try this game again. Must have been around the time i've made this post.
Has anyone tried multiplayer yet?

Yep, I've done some multiplayer with a colleague. After I told him not to set the ping to 249 ms when hosting it worked very well, almost no lag at all.

You do have to host it from your own system though and use port forward to allow connections to your server. You basically load a saved game in Multiplayer mode which other players can connect to (they can then also save the game).
