Far Cry 3 Impressions

I'm in about 4 hours into Far Cry 3 and thought I'd share my impressions of the game for those of you still on the fence.

Just a bit of history first, I passed on Far Cry 2 because the original Far Cry left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I didn't like how the AI always knew where you were even when hidden in vegetation or thick under brush and sometimes without even making a sound.

I also felt the first Far Cry was a bit too linear and unless there is something in the game that immerses me in the world, I get bored fast and move on. I never did finish the first Far Cry so passing on Far Cry 2 was easy.

Then comes Far Cry 3 and it had a lot of things going for it from the get go. It appeared to have a good story, great visuals (as always), a more open world and non-linear experience and crafting.

I really enjoyed this in Skyrim especially once it was modded; it just felt like a completely new game and I got lost well over 100 hours into that world.

In fact, it may be Skyrim that made me interested in Far Cry 3 the most.

Now about 4 hours into Far Cry 3 I can sum it up in just one word, WOW!

The Intro, the training/familiarization sequence has a few holes in it but overall is very well done. It also helps get you somewhat emotionally invested in your character which is a huge plus.

After completing training and the first mission, I pretty much got lost for two hours screwing around in the world. The crafting isn't the most flushed out I've ever seen but it's pretty good and what you don't use for crafting can be sold.

There is plenty of wildlife in Far Cry 3 and it's not just for show. The animals hunt and attack one another and animals actually behave as you'd expect them to. For instance, there are Komodo Dragons on the island and their next to impossible to spot in heavy brush sometimes. If you can kill them without getting hurt you're usually ok but if you take any damage, Komodo's come from all directions and put you in a world of hurt.

Animals also hunt one another and the best part of that is that they won't give up the hunt just to attack you. I thought this was a really nice touch because a lot of games have the AI turn against you even when their engaged in combat, Far Cry 3 doesn't.

Speaking of AI focusing on the task at hand, the Islanders and the Pirates are engaged in civil war against one another so its not uncommon to end up in the middle of one of these fights with Islanders fighting along side you.

Pirates are driving all over the Island so you're constantly either fighting them or hiding from them. I found myself in all out warfare with Pirates for the better part of an hour (maybe more) because their just so much fun to fight.

This one particular fight had me stuck and exposed on the beach and all I had for cover was some boulders to flank around. I'd kill the Pirates out to get me and more would come because they respond to sound, in fact, everything in the game seems to.

I must have killed a dozen or so Pirates before running out of ammo and having to swim underwater to safety. Most AI gives up once they lose line of sight but they don't in Far Cry 3, they keep looking for you for the most part.

I swam back with my C4, took out a guard and Jeep then re-armed as the guard had dropped his AK (for obvious reasons). Unfortunately the AI swarmed me and there was no choice but to hop in a Jeep and make a run for it.

I drove off, then circled back only to find the AI in a Jeep chasing me down which was excellent.

Outnumbered, outgunned and in a Jeep about to explode, I drove into the water and swam away. To my amusement, the driver of the Jeep pursuing me ended up driving into the water as well but drowned.

I think the whole fight itself was a bit Hollywood in feel but I'd be lying if I didn't say it was tremendous fun. In fact it's probably one of the best battles I've been in with AI since Max Payne.

I've only met a few characters in the game because following the story takes me forever, I always get lost in the exploring first. I did however finally complete the second mission in the story where you are tasked with getting some mushrooms for a doctors potion.

The doctor himself is a very good character, in fact, the character development in Far Cry 3 is nothing short of amazing. I really did like this doctor and the quest he sent me on is something I'd love to share but I don't want to spoil it for those of you who may still be considering picking the game up.

I will say though that this quest the doctor sent me on once again made me think back to the original Max Payne. It is simply an amazing mission and so well done it gave me shivers up my spine playing it. I'll probably re-load and play it again, it was that good.

Combat is awesome! There are just so many ways to approach a situation that no fight is the same as the previous. You can mix stealth take-downs and Rambo like mayhem or you can avoid the fight all together, it's up to you. You can even get animals involved and have them take care of the Pirates which is always fun to watch.

The biggest issue I noticed in the original Far Cry is completely gone in that the AI loses sight of you if you're in thick brush. They'll keep looking for you and can find you but it's clearly difficult and there have been times when I've gotten away without anyone being the wiser.

So far, the cover system is very well done so the Jungle finally plays a major role in combat. For that matter, the entire environment can be used to your advantage.

If the rest of the game has even a portion of what the beginning does it will be truly epic.

Now, it's obvious that I love Far Cry 3 however it is not without issues.

Some of the more glaring issues is the weather system is not synced properly. The weather effects themselves are amazing and very immersive however they lose marks as the rain, thunder and lightening sometimes roll in before the clouds do. The same can be said for the storm ending as the sky is usually blue before the storm ends.

Also, some of the environmental sounds are bugged. I noticed this particularly around cliff faces or anywhere that has direct sea to land access. The sound cuts out depending on what direction your character faces so quick movements make the sound issues obvious, hopefully they patch this.

Finally, the AI Pirates all drive the same vehicle and are dressed pretty much identically. It's not a deal breaker by any means but it does detract from the game as it stands out as sloppy when compared to the overall detail put into Far Cry 3.

Also, trading sux horribly. You can quick sell your junk but the items left over all have to be selected individually, click to sell, click to confirm you want to sell, rinse/repeat one item at a time and the end result it carpal tunnel.

BTW, default field of view sux. This is one of the first things you'll want to change. I have mine set to the mid 80's but the fact they allow you so much control over FOV is actually a plus.

Lastly, it's a bit odd that your character can go from complete pussy to badass within minutes. The fact the Islanders think you're some kind of legend for escaping kinda makes you feel a bit sleazy because, well, it's not true (I won't say why).

...

While there are clearly some issues that I hope they address, they pale when compared to the total package. Far Cry 3 is an amazing game and there is no way to play it, there is no way to pace it; the game works at your pace and caters to your tastes.

Linearity is mostly a thing of the past so the story becomes what you make of it and your experience is a reflection of how you choose to play.

At the end of the day I really believe that if you are in even the slightest bit interested in Far Cry 3, you owe it to yourself to play it. It's a really well designed game that gives you unparalleled personal freedom and a sh1tload of fun.

Very nice write-up d00k, and it very well reflects my own experiences with the game, though the bugs you mentioned haven't bothered me on xbox version, or I was just to busy to enjoy myself to notice them.
The pirates could have gotten a wider range of wardrobe indeed, though I often need to look twice to see if people I encounter are friendly or enemy.

I do know that there is some progression in the enemy difficulty the further ingame you get, but just as you I spend so much time free roaming that I've only done 3 main storyline missions in the past week.
The rest of the 30 hours, I've been doing side missions, killing animals, done offroad driving in jeeps and having a blast with watching how all the AI interacts with each other.
I've been trying to hunt by the roadkill method too, (not too close to cliffs I know by now), and it has led to some hilarious moments like when I was getting mauled by a tiger while repairing my jeep, ending up in me franticly trying to defend myself with the blowtorch, setting half the part of the jungle I was in on fire, managing to run off wiping off the flames off my arms and then being picked to death by a bird just before I could heal myself

I love the little extra details they have put in, like if you try to climb onto a slightly larger boat from the water you'll first dive underwater, then swim upwards again to get enough upward speed to get up the higher side of it. There's not many games bothering with details like that around. Going experimental by using vehicles, fire, explosives, stealth, use of higher ground, knife attacks, etc. only gets rewarded I feel. Great game so far!

Very nice Duke. I've been thinking about picking this game up... what are your pc specs and what settings do you have the game at? Just wondering if my pc can play it on high settings.

I'm running the game on Ultra and getting a constant 30FPS. I may scale it back a bit to bring the FPS up but it's perfectly playable at 30.

My rig is a Core i7 2700K running at Stock Speed which I believe is a 3.5 GHz Quad Core with Hyperthreading. I've got 8 GB DDR3, an N570GTX and am running the game off a SATA3 mechanical Western Digital Caviar Black.

I put in a marathon session last night, 8 hours in total and things have only gotten better. As you said Shilka, the game itself is amazing but the details really make it shine. There are so many details in the game that most of them simply go unnoticed until you stop to think about it.

The environment is not just beautiful, it's functional but it's functionality is a variable not a constant. I didn't realize until last night but different thicknesses of vegetation give you different amounts of viewblock. For example, thick hedges and bushes can hide you from just about any man but are useless against animals who hunt by scent. Also, hiding behind a tree will block bullets but not fully block view so while you may not be found from the guy you're watching, his buddy can still see you.

I also like the fact that walking through vegetation animates the leaves, most games ignore this which I can't understand because it breaks the immersion. The wind animates everything.

The lighting is so well done I'd have to call it photo-realistic. Last night I saw evening sun hitting a mountain village half in and out of shade and it was breathtaking. This game differentiates perfectly between morning, noon and night lighting conditions better than I've ever seen.

The only caveat of the Far Cry 3 environment is the quick progression between day/night cycles. I wish there was a setting to extend day/night cycles to be a bit more realistic.

Overall, I think Far Cry 3 has the best environment over any game I've ever played including Skyrim and that's saying a lot because Skyrim is near perfect from an environmental standpoint.

The hunting crafts are amazing and you simply can't go without them for long, especially when hunting Tigers, Dingo's, Rabid Dogs, etc. It's also a nice touch that these potions do not work on Alligators or Sharks because there ineffective under water.

Speaking of water, when you get out of the water you can actually hear the water dripping from your body and clothing. You can vary your swimming speed and also cannot hold your breath forever. The swimming is so well done you may actually find yourself enjoying it; what doesn't hurt is the fact it's very, very, useful.

Approaching by water is sometimes the best way to tackle a situation and while it's effective against man, it doesn't fool the Alligators or Sharks lol.

Then there's other details like when driving, if the visor has anything affixed to it it will shake as you drive with the weight of whatever is attached to it (usually a book of some sort). Even entering and exiting a vehicle is fully animated so it takes time to do both, time you sometimes don't have when in a firefight.

The vehicles have there own dynamic handling properties which degrade with damage and have differing levels of effectiveness over the terrain. Also, jumping from a moving vehicle is almost a pre-requisite sometimes and is animated really well.

One detail that blew me away last night was I was flying a Hang Glider which I've done numerous times before but this time out I had an Eagle flying with me. He stuck with me pretty much the whole time calling out "flight call" (I looked it up) and the experience was one of the most memorable and heart warming I've ever had in any game. I know that sounds a bit mushy but details like this really help put you in touch with the environment and to do this hundreds of feet over a breathtaking forest canopy in the evening light is impossible to articulate. I find myself wishing my daughter was there to share the experience with me, how bizarre is that?

Speaking of Hang Gliders, are they hard to land or what? I nearly got killed by one last night so I'm convinced getting out over water is the only smart way to land lol.

I managed to find a gunboat last night very similar to what you'd see in Apocalypse Now or any of the Vietnam War Movies. The gun on this boat is cumbersome to use but deals high damage so it's very useful against both infantry and vehicles. In fact, I intend to use them a lot because there is so much water in the game they can take you anywhere.

This boat sounds AMAZING so don't be surprised if you find yourself cranking the volume when driving it, yes it's that good.

I also didn't realize until your response Shilka that Far Cry 3 is the ONLY GAME I've ever played that I've not adjusted the volume on anything. Usually something gets adjusted and music is always the first to go or at least be toned down.

I think if you disable or turn down the music volume in Far Cry 3 you'll be missing a major part of the experience so I'd recommend you leave it alone personally. I hate, HATE, HATE Reggae Music but last night Far Cry 3 made me listen to one tune and it was the best I've ever heard. I'd be lying if I didn't say it's the one Reggae Song I'd actually listen to and enjoy if it were to come on the radio.

I actually believe that the music in Far Cry 3 is better than the music in Half Life 2 which is a pretty bold statement as Half Life 2's music is nothing short of epic. The only reason Far Cry 3's music is better is because it lasts longer and is a bit more environmentally relevant than Half Life 2.

There is also a fast travel system where you can fast travel to locations you find that are friendly or take through force and secure for your people. I've used it a few times just to sell loot but don't use it that much because the environment is just so damn fun I hate being away from it. I think the fact they gave us the option of fast travel is a sign of a developer giving the player freedom and I give them high marks on this front as well.

I can go on and on and on about this game (and probably will later) because there is just so much there to talk about.

I've played a lot of terrific games this year with Max Payne 3 and Dishonored being in the top of that list but Far Cry 3 has left them in the dust.

As far as I'm concerned, I've already seen enough to give it Single Player Game of the Year right now.

Nice review d00d. Also, checking out the villagers butts and b00bies with the zoom function on the camera is pretty sweet. 3 hours of gameplay right there

Really nice write-up, I like how you describe all the details. I was probably gonna get this game, but i'm definitely going to get this game now. I'm just hoping I can properly run it on my system.

I also love the mini-series 'The Farcry Experience' which they made around the game, really worth watching and kinda adds a new dimension to the game. The videos are just too funny to watch with some great humor. Pretty cool that the pirate character Vaas is actually based on the actor that's starring in the videos.

Video's can be found here.

Well, I "purchased" this game last night and am about 2 hours in. I'm loving it so far. Duke, I found 30 fps quite laggy so I changed video to from Very High to "optimal" and turned off MSAA and now I get around 50 - 60 fps. Kinda makes me wish to run out and buy a second 670GTX so I can crank up the video but I won't cave. This game is a hardware beast.

Excellent game thus far.

We'll have to try some Coop or online gameplay just to see how it plays. I've heard mixed reviews on the MP aspect of Far Cry 3 but it does look interesting enough to at least attempt once or twice.

Had another absolutely amazing experience last night.

I don't know what it is but I LOVE FIGHTING PIRATES!!! Last night there were two Pirate Jeeps at an intersection so I started sniping them. They were easily avoidable but their just too much damn fun to fight.

I got headshots on all except one which I missed completely and hit the Jeep he was in front of. He started panic firing at me which alerted another Jeep (with a mounted gun) that was parked down the road. I killed this guy but the the guys in the Jeep knew where I was so they came at me.

I shot the guy out of the gunner seat and missed my first two shots on the driver. I finally hit the driver with a headshot when he was about 20 or 30 feet away from me. He tumbled out of the Jeep which went screaming past me only to hit something and overturn with the engine and lights still on.

Again it was another Hollywood type experience but it was absolutely awesome!

I mention this because it's another new development. I'm about 25 hours in now and at half that you've usually seen all a game has to offer but I don't think this is the case in Far Cry 3.

Also, I swim like h3ll to get through the streams so I don't run into Alligators. I'm not sure if this is the reason I've only seen 3 so far but one of them I saw as he sprung out of the water and took a man on shore under (which they are perfectly capable of doing in real life).

It was actually like watching nature channel filming an Alligator springing to pull an unsuspecting Wildebeest under, you just don't expect this in a video game.

The other thing I noticed last night is that it seems anyway, whenever you finish a story quest within seconds there's usually either gunplay or an explosion nearby. I don't know how many times it's been something the Pirates are up to and it makes me laugh out loud every single time.

Last night I was emerging from a cave and heard an explosion which immediately made me chuckle. I didn't see what caused the explosion but there were 3 Pirates there with a Bear in a Cage.

I shot the Cage, the Bear got out and mauled all 3 Pirates.

Typical awesome in Far Cry 3, what a truly epic game.

Thanks for posting your impressions Duke! I've been interested in this game too, but at the moment I have waaaay to many games to play before I hop into this one - and now the Chritsmas sales are coming as well. Oh dear, how will I ever have time enough to play them all?
Will pick it up some time in the future for sure :D

Leimboy if you pick up one game for yourself in the short term, it really needs to be Far Cry 3. I just cannot believe how great this game is and it's just so much larger than most other Single Player Games.

I think I'm right around the 35 hour mark and I thought I was getting close to the end but now I'm not so sure? The story has taken a turn to the surreal and now a whole new branch of missions has opened up.

Not to mention all the side quests I still have left to do. As it stands I think I'm only half way through which will make this a 70+ hour game.

WARNING: SPOILER AHEAD!

I can't get past the boat mission with the radio operators... itchy trigger finger syndrome...
If you exercise some patience, you can wait until one or two get reasonably close to a fuel drum, the explosion has a pretty decent blast radius.

The only part I had trouble with and that I died from was your buddy getting the boat stuck on another boat after you shot everyone out of it.

There's also a boat that comes from behind you when the chopper comes into view so make sure to take the boat out first or you probably won't survive the chopper part.

I tried the fuel drum tactic, it said "mission failed, you have alerted the radio operators" DOH!

The first time you meet the doctor is pretty spectacular eh... reminded me of Max Payne too, I must admit I am struggling with the concept of the whole rock throwing thing though. Me personally, if I saw several rocks flying out from behind a tree, I would, and this is just me if I were a Pirate, ya know, GO AND CHECK OUT WHAT'S BEHIND THE FRIKKEN TREE! And not go and stand next to a highly explosive fuel drum gorming out at a stone...

But that's just me ;)

Rest of it is pretty good so far!

Radio Operator notified, are we talking about the same mission lol?

Funny you'd over-analize the stone throwing too, rofl. The chances of you actually seeing this little stone being thrown aren't that high really. Normally I don't lob stones over their heads anyway because I want to draw them away from me and not risk hitting one of them.

The idea is their not investigating a stone, their investigating the sound made by the stone hitting something.

...and yes, something tells me it could land in a lake of gasoline next to a bonfire and you'd go investigate. In fact, you'd probably pull up a chair and sit right in the middle of the gas puddle just to see if the sound occurs again.

Hopefully it's not near Tea Time or the whole camp could be going up around you and you'd just sit there with that blank look on your face.
