I was under the impression that this was an entirely new game engine which is why I passed on the past few iterations.

Does anyone know if that's the case?

I've read from an article that it was a further revision / upgrade of their engine, not a completely new / rewritten engine, if that's what you're asking. But I don't stand by that 100%.

k, here's a few regular gameplay video's:

Couple things I noticed from the vids, streams and official sources:
  • over 250 pieces of equipment from 75 manufacturers
  • overhauled graphics, still playable by older pc's
  • new animals (pigs)
  • new crops (sunflowers and soy beans)
  • ability to convert bales to loose straw etc. again with shredders
  • you can manually load, and drive trains
  • trains can be loaded with produce too (and logs still as well of course)
  • loose stacked items such as bales, logs, pallets, bigbags can be secured with straps for transport now
  • You can now pick up (and throw) those nasty toothpic logs by hand (and some other items too)
  • animal transporting
  • all 3D models supplied by manufacturers
  • female farmers
  • Some stations have a portal crane for (un-)loading
  • equipment can be leased at the shop
  • more ways of fertilizing, and you can fertilize several times per growth cycle (yield increase stack)
  • plowing increases yield, and after 3 harvests not plowing will lower yield
  • vehicle customizing options like different engine, tire types etc
  • improved forestry physics
  • animal breeding (wapwap!)
  • new missions where you can work the fields belonging to other farmers (using their equipment, all fields not owned by you will be worked by other farmers (untill you buy them))
  • limited capacity of grain silo's and the ability to expand with placeable silo's
  • improved AI workers with better pathfinding
  • ingame (streaming) radio stations
  • ability to grow oil seed radish on feelds as a natural fertilizer
  • all harvested stuff is persistent and can exist outside of 'containers'. Meaning you can drop grass, hay, wood chips, grain anywhere on a pile, and it will stay there untill picked up again
  • economy is tweaked, with prices fluctuating more wildly, and high demand not necesarily providing better prices then the normal fluctuation allows for (no need for high demand hoarding)
  • animals are more expensive to keep
  • slurry and manure can be sold as well
  • minimap can be set to large, normall or fuly hidden
  • AI traffic can be set on in MP
  • one dedicated selling point that needs delivery by train

I kind of was convinced I wouldn't buy again, but after seeing the new stuff, I can't resist XD

After playing for a while I must say it's better then I expected to be. They have clearly been doing optimizing on the engine, so I can play on highest settings with a solid 60 FPS on my aging GTX 660, so it definately runs better then 15.

Sounds are much better too, there is a difference between being in and outside the tractor, and both tractors as well as equipment have got distinctive start-up sounds now.
Textures are clearer, but especially the lighting is much better. Where in 15 you had a 'flashlight cone' of light, now each light is a seperate lightsource, including brake/reverse/indicator and beacons, which clearly reflect off your equipment and other surfaces.

Cranes are much more sturdier, which is especially noticable on the logging equipment. No more 'flappy joints', but firm equipment that reacts much more natural now. Behaviour of logs and fallen trees has very much improved, and being able to handlift light bits of wood helps tremendously. It also enables you to saw a wedge out of a tree, take the wedge out and have the tree falling into the direction you want when felling by hand.

There is a lot of task specific equipment, and each implement has clear description of what it needs, what it fits to and what it does.

Next to that, giants has a bunch of mods available at their website already, including the ITrunner pack, and a bunch of loose implements, buildings etc.

But what I'm most happy with is they have released 3 parts of their '4real mod' series.

The fist one causes wheels to destroy crops when driven on, which fits the game perfectly as you can upgrade tractors to have narrow tires or care tires, which will not destroy crops when you drive through the field.
The second one seperates the wheels from the chassis when it comes to getting dirty. It works per seperate tire, and it looks much more realistic with tires getting dirty fast, while the tractor itself gets dirty much slower.

But then the third 4real mod... Im absolutely delighted with this one; it's called the ground response mod, and it makes the tires behave differently per surface. It's basicly a physics mod, and they have done well, very well I must say:

Concrete slabs feel bumpy, dirt roads even bumpier, and fields, yep, you rock and roll there, where not only your wheels but also your tractor shakes noticably, and, especially in first person it gives you the illusion that your driving on a farmers field.
Next to that, tires will sink in the surface depending on what it is, a bit on a field ( so when one side of your tractor is on grass and the other half on the field you noticably lean over, and much more on ploughed ground.
When conditions get rough (uphill on dirt), or wet, you'll also get wheelspin. Despite no FFB, visually it does a great job at giving you the feeling you are on a farmers field, where in 15 there was no difference at all between driving on a road oir on ploughed ground. I'm absolutely loving this (official) mod.

There are much more little things that have improved, but that would make this bit way too long to read. If you do get the game, make sure to at least get the 4real mods at the official site!: http://www.farming-simulator.com/mods.php
