Wanted to start a thread on you first racing game experiences. What do you first remember playing that bring back some awesome waves of nostalgia? Amazing to see this and see how far games have come.

My first racing game was Mario Andretti Racing on Sega Genesis:

Can't really remember which was first since I was 3. Then my dad bought a steering wheel and this game:

I don't think there is a thing in my dad's life that he regrets more then buying that very first steering wheel......

Racing Destruction set (on commodore 64):

Not only did it have 2 player splitscreen, you could race with joystick, and, best of all, it came with a level editor, and it's actually the game that sparked my interest in playing around with level editors :D Not bad for a 1985 game.

It's about 1992 when I played my first more simlike race game (on a 386); Formula one Grand Prix, by microprose, which is a game that also led to my longest playsession ever, doing a full F1 season in real time with a friend, skipping 2 nights and living on coffee, tosti's and some green stuff we used to smoke. Multiplayer you had to play in turns, where you would play for x minutes, then when it was my friends turn the computer would take over my car and my friend would be handed control for the next x minutes in his car.

Played this with the keyboard and it is technically the first game I played! Then my dad bought a steering wheel and this game:

haha that game is awesome. I see that video you posted actually shows them racing at the Detroit Grand Prix. I can say from experience it looks nothing like that! I was wondering if the track layout has changed since then, I'm not sure. It did not look familiar.

That video is pretty amazing. That was WAY ahead of the curve for its time. I believe I played a similar but later version of that game at the local arcade.

Great story. What an epic session! That would be absolutely crazy to drive like that, let alone do that for two nights straight.

I have never been into racing games so it's exceptionally difficult to remember one that I may have played once or twice.

I do remember playing Outrun in the Arcade but that was many years ago when Arcade's were still relevant. It could have been 1988 or so when I was playing Outrun:

Fast forward over a decade to when I first embraced Gaming at home.

For whatever reason, I purchased a Logitech Formula Force GP that came bundled with Sports Car GT.

I knew nothing about Sports Car GT and only loaded it to test out the wheel. To my surprise the game was simply amazing.

Terrific visuals for that time, weather, day/night, and competent race ready AI that actually tried to not destroy their vehicles.

The reason I iRace is all due to Sports Car GT, no other game ever came close to how that one made me enjoy racing.

Duke, That game looks pretty good, for whatever year it was. Were they RL tracks, too?

Why doesn't iRacing have rain!??

I believe they had Mosport and perhaps Silverstone and/or Sebring but it's been so many years now I don't even remember.

Come to think of it they also had something that went from fast to flowing switchbacks very much like VIR. I wonder if this is why I love VIR and Mid-Ohio so much?

For me it was Gran Turismo 1 on the Playstation. I remember a co-worker telling me how great it was, so I went out and bought the game and the playstation. Since then I was hooked.

Hard to imagine, that considering all the driving equipment I have now, I played all the Gran Turismo releases (up to 4) with the D-pad. Heck I don't think the analog sticks for the PS controllers even came out until the Playstation 2.

Those were the days of some serious grinding to get that next badass upgrade, or new 1,000 horsepower race car to race in the next higher tier of races.

Actually not true. PS1 defintely had analog sticks... one of my favorite ps games was the first to actually require use of them... Ape Escape (such a great game) only allowed you to use the analog sticks, the dpad was only just for equipment selection i think.

I didn't really get a chance to play much of GT because after I had the PS1 (I had it chipped and was able to go to blockbuster and burn every game I rented) I went to the xbox.

Hmm, I think that has to be Stunts. Pretty amazing game back then with an extensive track editor.

Wow, I actually played that a lot as well in the arcade. Looking at those screenshots just makes you think of an arcade hall.. oh the memories ;)

I knew this game looked familiar. It is influenced by the earlier game Hard Drivin' which was at the local arcade. Actually the very first 3D racing game. I loved it because it was the only racing game they had at the arcade that had a clutch and shift box and FFB. For coming out in 1989 that was insane...

On a similar note, it would be amazing to get ahold of that arcade and retrofit it with a PC and new screen(s). It is perfect.
