Fragtard DayZ server - restarts?

Well, I've had a closer look at why server crashes appear, but I can only find game related causes, not really server related causes. For example, people connecting to the server that use hacked items can cause to crash the server. As a specific example, people that use a hacked backpack with thousands of inventory slots, having 5000+ items with them, can severely bog the server down or even crash it.

In previous builds it turned out that some very simple stuff, basicly bugs in the game itself could crash the server. For examle, in a previous build, picking up a splint and then throwing it on the ground would crash the server. It's not unthinkable that likewise stuff may cause server crashes in this build, wether it's trying to fit a certain scope on a certain gun, replacing a rotten tomato in the inventory with another rotten tomato, using a specific item while prone in a certain building, who knows, thats for the dayz developers to find out and patch in the next build.

As for the character wipes, the general consensus on the official forums and bugreports all point to reconnecting fast after a crash/restart. So really the only thing that can be done about this is wait a bit after a restart and not reconnect to quick, certainly not right away. It's a serverwide problem and even the official servers are plagued by it. Sorry I can't offer any other tips on this one, but after hours skimming through the official forums and bugreport lists this is all I can advise about this to prevent this from happening.

As for changing things to the server, as mentioned before in this topic, the options are very limited. The dayz developers demand servers to have specific server architecture, specific operating system configuration, and very specific mission/setting configurations. You can not change anything about this, nor install scripts, change settings or anything.
Doing so will result in either the server not working at all, the server not being connected to the hive at all, or even the server getting blacklisted and the owner banned.

The things you can change are very limited, like running hardcore or not (have 3rd person or not), automated restart interval, time of day, and being a passworded server (but these have no connection to the hive either).

In short, DayZ developers are very strict with the server setups, there is not much, if anything we can do about that at this point of time. The server crashes, as far as I read are not directly related to te server box (and ours has very decent specs as mentioned), but really to game programming and hacked items. For all we know, having increased crashes on the server are caused by a certain person having hacked items regularly visiting our server, or by something simple like a certain normal action by player that happens to cause a crash in this build.

Next build will bring persistance and a global character wipe, so at least initially the hacked items will be removed from all players and the hive, hopefully taking that cause for servercrashes away, again, at least initiallly.

Sorry, wish I would have been able to find some sort of solution for the problems you've been experiencing, but in server setup everyone is bound by what the developers dictate, and for the character wipes there's no other solution (yet) then to not reconnect too quickly. Hopefully this will see a patchfix soon, because losing your stuff by your own mistake is one thing, but losing it by just connecting to server really can put people off...

There is a fix that sometimes works with the character loss.
As soon as you see that you spawned in as a bambi, don't move and disconnect immediatly.
Then reconnect to a server that is running with a decent amount of players to make sure you do get connected to the hive.
It works for a lot, but there had also been reports of that fix being unsuccesfull.
