Super Mod
Not first person but the original blockbuster third person shooter arrives for the first time on PC! (Original remastered version not withstanding)
I was really excited for this as I have played all four Gears of War games on the xbox BUT every windows 10 Microsoft title I have played so far has been an absolute train wreck (Quantum Break and Forza Horizon 3 I'm looking at you) in terms of performance issues and generally being a poor port. So I was really trying to play down my own expectations and resigned myself to being happy if the game just ran decently.
All things considered I shouldn't have gone for it but if there was one game to convince me to try a Windows 10 DX12 game it's GoW.
And omfg am I glad I did. Seriously, this game has taken all the best bits from the previous four games (yes I know this is called Gears of War 4 but there was a spin off prelude game after GoW 3) and refined them into this perfect package. It's the difference between cheap whisky and an aged, single malt. It's the difference between fine dining at a £150 a head restaurant and a happy meal. It's the difference between... ok enough of that.
If you have windows 10, and can crank up the visual preset's to take advantage of this game's frankly incredible visuals, and even if you have never played a Gears game before, you owe it to yourself as a gamer to add this to your library.
On a sidenote I have noticed an increased frequency of games utilizing poor anti aliasing techniques. Jaggies everywhere, even at 4K (!), even with anti aliasing maxed out in game (GTA 5, Project Cars, Alien Isolation the list goes on and on). With Gears set to Ultra there is not a jagged line in sight at 1440p. NOT ONE. And omg does it make a difference. It's how PC games should look like. When I say this game is visually stunning I really do mean it. There have been numerous times in thi sgame when I have said out loud "wow" at how good this game looks. Seriously. Also, they have even included an option for the "insane" visual preset which is intended for pc's of the future, and they aren;t kidding. This setting crushed my 980Ti, and even GTX 1080's can't run it. I like that they have done that. The benchmarking suite included within the game is the most comprehensive I have seen in any pc game too. You run the benchmark, it will give you a detailed results screen which you can then adjust each and every slider an option and the game will tell you exactly how many fps you will lose/gain. This is a very cool feature and a first, meaning no more of the tiresome trial and error method of every PC game before it.
For someone who played the original gears on the xbox 360 (which was WAY ahead of it's time and still one of the best looking games not just on the 360 but looks better than a lot of Xbox One games) this is a dream come true. And... well... chainsaw bayonets. What more do you need?
