IL2 revisited, Patch 4.11 makes it worthwile?

Team Deidalos has added some very good features to good ole IL2:

- engine overheating for AI
- AI can't see through clouds
- more AI maneuvers
- more complex CEM

Is this enough to resurrect IL2 for the squadnights?

Hey Wotan, not sure I'm supposed to see this forum!

I've been trying out the new patches as they come out but if you've not tried it, take a look at http://ultrapack.il2war.com/index.php?board=7.0

Works with the latest patches but is probably the most awesome community mod ever, as its a collection of mods all built to work with each other. The content within them is stunning and its being used on lots of online servers and it comes with a program to turn on and off different mods, patches etc so its compatible.

Yes I know about the mods. But sometime ago we decided to stay vanilla for the squadnights. So are you interested to fly with us again, mondo?

Yeah, I guess it could be fun! It really depends on when you guys do squad night.

I've also got to learn COD a bit, I played it for a few hours but haven't learnt the start up or CEM for these planes, seems allot more complicated than IL2:1946.

That's right. And the best thing is: no or incorrect procedures in the manual ;-) Hit youtube to learn the startup sequences.

Hi mondo! You're more than welcome (back) to our forums, as always :D

Yeah, I'm leaning towards installing IL2:1946 again and start flying that again. With the new features in the newest patch it sure looks good. And it wasn't bad to begin with either.
I'm also thinking that the easiest way to get the squad in the air again is to go vanilla. At least in the beginning.
After that we can decide on whether we go for a mod like UP or stay vanilla. I'm happy either way.

I'm still a couple of weeks from getting a decent line so I'll be sitting comfortably on the fence for now as I can't do any online gaming for now ;)

What nights do you guys fly? Still Sundays?

Looks fairly simple. Just a few things to turn and a few switches, the 109 looks harder than the UK planes though. I hope they put the FW's in soon, the Kommandogerät should really come into its own in CLOD.

Check out the DCS A10C or DCS Blackshark full start up sequence. Its ridiculous. And in BS2 there is no tutorial, just a 534 page manual.

Meanwhile it takes ~6 minutes to start up the A-10. I practiced - a lot ;)

But you are right about the warbirds. Tank, mix, magnetos, prop pitch, throttle, ignition. is the standard procedure for all of them. In the Brit planes don't forget to set the gyro to magneto compass.

In the A10, takes me about 20, give or take 10 for missing a switch. I've actually given up on it for the minute until I've learnt the KA50.

I'll give the CLOD start ups a look at. To be honest i'm playing EVE a little more these days, along with BF3 and World of Tanks as well as DCS:BS2 so if I get to the point of learning CLOD properly I'd be surprised!

At the moment CloD is terribly underperforming beacuse of the badly written
graphics engine. For instance, I have two HD6870 cards in crossfireX setup
and it scales nicely but CloD can't use them! When monitoring the cards only
35% of the capacity are taxed and the FPS goes down to 15 over cities with
medium settings.

I hope for a signifacant boost when the new patch arrives,

I don't see myself ordering COD anytime soon because there are just wayyyyy too many complaints about it even now. Until it's fixed or on sale for really cheap, I'll continue to pass.

This on the other hand looks simply terrific. I'd be more than willing to re-install and update the entire IL2FB + Expansions if you guys continue to fly with it.

The other limitation I'm stuck under is that I'm 8 or 9 hours behind pretty much all of you so your Tuesday/Thursday Schedule just won't work. If you guys ever decide on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday then let me know.

They've certainly added quite allot.

I'll update but will still use the Ultra mod pack as the bench mark since 99% of the Il2 community uses that these days.

@Duke: We'll try to open up one of those days so you can join us again on a more regular basis.
Always good fun to have you in the same airspace as the enemy :p
I'll create another poll for that later, we just have to decide if we want to go all-in on IL-2 or if we're giving COD another chance.

@mondo: I think we'll go for the UP after some time, I just think it's easier for everyone to find the common ground if we just start out in vanilla. As it were last time we tried UP (2.x something?) it was a collection of mods and depending on what mods were (not) allowed on servers it turned out to be quite the guesswork to get a game going. That is something I want to avoid for our coops or when we join external servers. Hopefully this have changed a bit since then?

lol, I know, I'm a bullet magnet

BTW, when it comes to running with or without mods in IL2, can you not just modify the .exe similar like we do with ArmA2? This way you can have 2 .exe's, one with mods loaded and one without.
