iRacing AI update

First off, I want to say I loved my time with iRacing. When I chose not to renew, it was because of time. I'm a parent of two kids and have a life that doesn't fit in with having to shut myself off to commit to a race in Racing. With my free time limited, I need a game/sim where I can pick it up at any time and jump right into something. There were several instances where I would have a short window of time to allow me to hop into a race, only to get wrecked out in the first couple laps. Sometimes it was my fault, sometimes it wasn't. What was required more than anything was the ability to immediately jump into another race and try again, but I couldn't, having to wait for the next time slot sucked. I could always run some practice laps, but that also lost its appeal.

My life is still busy, but the prospect of having AI gets me excited and wanting to renew again. The idea of running races against the AI whenever I want, but also racing online when time permits, is exactly what the doctor ordered. Hone my skills even more offline, while still having the fun of a competitive race. If I crash, I can immediately restart.

I know a lot of people have a negative view of iRacing adding AI, but for me personally this is what will bring me back. I have to imagine others may feel the same way.

How do you all feel about it? Is it a good thing? A bad thing? Or maybe you are ambivalent? I was just curious to see what all the seasoned B2O'ers thought about it.

I'm looking forward to it for the same reason. With all the variety in cars/trucks available, it will revive a lot of older content on an on demand basis. With all the new VR headsets coming out, it's a good time to be a bad parent.

I'm not looking forward to AI in iRacing because it's going to bring @little P back to iRacing.

BTW, they're also bringing car customization to iRacing as well P. Soon you'll be able to have sombreros, dingle balls and custom exhaust colors.

Actually you had pretty good pace P, was a shame to see you leave.

^^^ Wanker, I actually lol'd

Yeah I mean I think it will be invaluable to be able to learn how to race off line when needed, how to race in a pack, obviously practice pals was the best option for that, but for us (soon not to be maybe, are we, who knows, does anyone even care) euro-pee-ons it wasn't always do-able timewise.

The thing I loved about practice pals was being able to make mistakes and learn from them by getting back out there quickly and trying it again. Racing with AI will never be the same as practice pals, I mean, pretty sure they can't join teamspeak, abuse you, take you over the barrier upside down and on fire for shits and giggles to see what happens (disclaimer: practice pals does not condone this behaviour - I blame the wobbly pops).

But it will be a good tool for learning how to react when you are forced off line, and how a car behaves in unusual circumstances which you couldn't do with just practice laps on your own, or with public practice sessions where if you made a mistake you were immediately sentenced to death by stoning by a public committee of iRacers who happened to get their constitutional rights infringed by netcode and/or someone missing the braking point by 3mm.

Also, I like the sound of dingle balls on my car.

I searched for "iracing AI" on google and this thread came up on the front page... Anyone know how close it is to release?

iRacing is holding off at the moment because they found the AI was considerably smarter than virtually every Member from England.

As always iRacing is very committed to not dividing their Member-base so additional work is required.

Currently iRacing is working on dumbing the AI down to help correct the issue but apparently even small tweaks puts the driver in the passenger seat.

Work continues...
