iRacing Setup Thread

Re: Setup Thread

Car: McLaren MP4-12C GT3
Track: Autodromo Nazionale Monza
Type: Race (130 Litres)
Season: 2015 - S04
Properties: It should be a pretty stable setup but more aggressive than the baseline. Tire pressures on the left side are once click down to help equalize tire wear. I've tried wing at 2 and 4 and noticed that I had a much harder time getting through the corners with wing 2. Brake bias at ~44% to help with a little trail braking. Tire wear should be a little above 70% after a full stint, depending on the weather.

The qualify setup is a little more aggressive but otherwise mostly the same and less fuel.

Re: Setup Thread

If another Driver gets in your car during an Endurance Race, they automatically share your setup right?

Re: Setup Thread

The setup from the 1st driver should be loaded throughout the entire session.
If he switched from baseline that is.

Re: Setup Thread

Yes, as soon as more drivers connect to a team they will each have the setup that the first driver is currently running. In a race you also cannot change anything, just view the setup.

Another useful feature is that anyone connected to a team can view the black boxes, whether you're driving or not. Choosing to be Pit Crew (or similar) allows you to change pit settings for when the driver pits.

Car: Aston Martin DBR9
Track: Mount Panorama
Type: Race (55 Litres)
Season: 2015 - S04
Properties: Modified from a Watkins Glen setup. Brake bias is more forward to help with downhill braking. Lowered coast ramp angle a bit to make it less snappy on off-throttle turn in, such as in the turn before skyline and in the dipper. Wing at 5; it's not quick on the straight but any lower will make it more tricky on the mountain.

So do the BMWs have an agreed upon set for Road Atlanta yet? I turned a couple laps last night but don't know what to expect yet in terms of lap times and such.

Re: Setup Thread

Nope. The last setup I was using was a modified Monza set and it felt pretty crappy.

This is a tough track to setup for because you need downforce through most of the track without sacrificing too much time on the straight.

Re: Setup Thread

I tried a few laps last night in my Barber set (what was last used). I feel like that is more appropriate and it felt pretty decent. I'll see if I can post that here later tonight and we can drive with that and go from there?

I gave Ken the set we're using. It's a Spa set with adjusted tire pressures and wing on 2 for endurance. I did 1:20.5xx in a random Sprint practice.

Thanks. If one of you two can post that here that'd be awesome.

Re: Setup Thread

Sorry Dino. It seemed like a decently fast setup, but I don't know if it was me or what but it felt really awkward to drive and I wouldn't trust myself for more than five laps in that thing. There was a lot of throttle off oversteer that I'm not used to (compared to my previous setups), to say the least.

Here's my setup, as I mentioned before. I believe it's a great setup... very reliable and pretty fast. I got down to a 1:20.5xx (admittedly it was in a faster session, however, absolutely no draft) but it was 5-10 laps into a test stint... and I haven't really driven in the past 2 weeks so I can imagine a faster drive can get it even lower.

So here it is.

Re: Setup Thread

How and where did you get offthrottle oversteer? O.O If anything, I keep trying to put some in, without losing on-throttle turning. Maybe you're trailbraking too much? I trailbrake in other cars too, but with BMW, it goes through the corner faster if you slowdown before the corner a bit more than usual and use gas to balance it as you're going through and out.

Re: Setup Thread

Again I was rusty and I used your setup first. So I'll give it another go tonight. I wasn't as used to the track and was having issues judging turn 2 to set up for turn 3. So coming up the hill to get onto the brake I was having some issues there.

It's probably a combination of my rustyness, not having had a ton of practice this week, and being too used to my personal setup that I make minor changes to weekly. I'll try again tonight after our league session and see how I fare.

Do a long session in fixed weather server, make your setup and stick with it. Only changes required would be tire pressures and maaaaaybe the wing if you want to stabilize the car. Other than that, fiddling with random crap every 2 laps is only a placebo and you'll most likely ruin the car. I've done that before but when I did as above, after told by guys much faster than me, I actually gained speed over time. Lap times are 99% driving, 1% setup.

Here's the best lap from the session just now: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ucjmz1wltkglb4c/HOTLAP_RW_Road_Atlanta_BMW.rpy?dl=0

All of my 27 laps were between 1:21.5xx and 21.8xx. Ocassional faster ones were from HPD's draft.

As you already know, endurance racing isn't about hotlapping, quite the opposite, consistency which I've noticed is lacking as mentioned in PP threads, so work on that and turn off delta bar :)

Example: Autobahn league where I drive the Vette. I had 2-3 different setups for suspension and gearing depending on type of track (Spa/Monza vs Mosport/Brand Hatch). I adjusted tire pressures and BB as needed, and off I went. After about 200-300 laps on average, I gained time. Before that, I fiddled and asked about everything, yet gained nothing. 2nd last and last races, I was making the overall winner work for 1st position :)

Car: McLaren MP4-12C GT3
Track: Road Atlanta
Type: Race (130 Litres)
Season: 2015 - S04
Properties: Difficult to make a good feeling set for this car on this track. Davey and I messed around with the shocks a little to make the car more stable on top of the hill after the esses, on that bouncy exit. The car will still understeer in the esses and turn 1, but it should be stable enough in the last corner. Although this will require gentle wheel input.

Wing is at 6 at the moment. I've tried wing 4 in 28 degree weather and when it is that cold (low 1:19's pace) this wing seems fine. I've also done a stint at wing 6 however in 40 degree weather and I feel 6 is the bare minimum here, especially towards the end of the stint. In 40 degree weather my tire tread remaining was at 58% on the left side, after 44 laps.

Honestly Dino I couldn't drive your set either which is why I reverted back to Mid-Ohio and Monza sets.

For me the problem was mostly about getting on the power coming out of the downhill esses because I was continually chasing the car through this part of the track.

I was also having trouble at the top of the hill if you remember and changing my line only made things worse for me. I've always taken the one line and need to ask more of the car in that braking zone than it's prepared to give me.

I just put it down to different driving styles between you and I as the reason I couldn't run your set.

I've run BMW sets from both Tim Olson and Jon Hall (back when they were both running them) and can't get more than a few laps in with Jons sets yet can do a full race with Tims.

I'll try your set tonight Kyle and see if that helps me out.

I didn't have a good Barber set which is why I went with Mid-Ohio and Monza. Our car handled the curbs pretty well at Monza in the previous Endurance so I thought I could make it work.

Sadly it ended up feeling loose, slow and dangerous.
