What an amazing little game. Here's part of the Wiki entry, I warn though if you check out the wiki page avoid the plot section as it will reveal way too much of the story.
Gone Home is a first-person interactive story adventure video game developed and published by The Fullbright Company.[SUP][3][/SUP] The plot focuses on exploration of its setting.[SUP][4][/SUP] It takes place in June 1995 at a house in the Pacific Northwest, with a young woman who returns after traveling abroad to find her entire family gone from their home.
It's only 3 or 4 hours long but has an amazing story and great detail. Actually, the best detail I have ever seen in a game. Wandering around an old mansion during a thunderstorm and unlike every other game of this type this house actually felt lived in as the attention to detail is fantastic. Because I'm a sucker for nostalgia, the setting of it being placed in June 1995 brings me back to alternative rock, sci-fi television and physical telephone answering machines. There's also some great Courtney Love Hole inspired riot grrrl music, some I actually used to listen to back in the day on my old university stationed mix tapes. Alas, I don't want to spoil the game for anyone by saying too much. The voice acting is fucking incredible and probably the best I have ever heard. It's an artsy sorta game and although it received great reviews from pretty much every single gaming site out there, there is a debate raging as to whether its' a "real game". Idiots. Of course it's a real game, it just doesn't have guns to shoot. But like all games, some people love it (and some even cried at the conclusion according to the Something Awful thread I read) and some people think it's a waste of time.
Catch it on a Steam sale, at $20.00 its definitely a little short timewise for the money.
They're saying this game will be the spawn of an entire sub-genre of interactive games. I'm going to have to check out future releases. I'm also going to get my 16 year old daughter to give this a go when she stays with me in a few days.
