We wanted to have some time to first calmly check out the game, and especially have time to figure out how the game actually works as there is very little info about this, and wiki's are still very incomplete an faulty, without anyone hacking at our backs and stealing our stuff, as land claiming is not implemented, and object claiming is either very limited and for some items not existent. Currently anyone can access your stuff and supplies without getting negative alignment, which is not how it should work eventually. Gates in walls can still be opened by anyone etc. The GM stuff hasn't been properly implemented either, but it should be soon. Just a bit too many griefing options open at the moment. Currently nothing keeps you from walking into another groups village and build a load of fences in the middle of it that can not be removed. Especially once the GM can add/remove objects and the likes, I see little reason to keep the server passworded then.

Plan is to open up the server later once we get a grasp of how things work and after the initial hotfixes and patches. There's around 8 people we've got playing on the server now, a couple from outside of fragtard already too :).

Server updated to latest patch :

Patch notes (ver. 0.1.8.0):


  • Fixed some rare client connection crashes while joining a server with exotic tunnel combinations
  • Added additional debug info for client crashes to locate them faster
  • Fixed some of the more frequent client crashes. There are still a good amount left, but we’ll get them sooner or later
  • Fixed item dupe bug. Reporter received 1 LiF:YO CD key as a token of gratitude
  • Fixed some serious server crashes
  • Skillcap setting should properly work now. You should be able to set skillcap up to 3000
  • In game text chat should properly separate chat lines when non-standard characters are used (Cyrillic for instance)
  • Fixed and added some more system chat messages to ease understanding of what the game wants from you
  • Bone glue should be now accessible as a recipe at 0 level of Procuration skill
  • Skinning of wild animals should now drop Thin and Thick hides
  • Fixed tanning tub and drying rack objects. The entire leather production chain should be working now
  • Campfires, forges and other devices that burn fuel shpuld work properly now
  • Server browser should work faster now, but there are some issues left in it
  • Buildings are now claimed for 24 real life hours instead of 12
  • Minor fixes to units and formation bonus effects
  • EULA checkbox and button were tweaked to be properly visible :)
  • There should be less or no achievements spam or false achievements triggering
  • Tracking abilities are named properly now
  • Added missing legs parts in rag clothes
  • We have created a ping response protocol, that can be useful for hosting providers to detect if game server is up or down to auto restart it. More info is in readme.txt of dedicated server

Why exactly is the server passworded?
Exactly how Shilka explained it. At the moment the game is really early-alpha and there's too many griefing options that are not punished and also not punish-able for the moment. We can't even kick a griefer from the server at the moment without going to extends like blocking his IP on the box itself and even that is not a good solution since we know how easy it is to get a new IP address.

I completely agree that as soon as there are useful GM commands being developed so we can remove built items, houses, etc, kick/ban assholes if needed and make sure that our "hard-worked-for" assets are somewhat more safe from griefers, there is no more reason to keep the server closed and the public will be allowed to join us.

I picked up the game and have been doing some heavy reading about the game.

They're apparently not planning on implementing things like claiming terrain/items at all in LiF:YO and are reserving that entirely for the MMO when it eventually releases.

So the only thing that we'd really be waiting for, then, would be the ability to kick/ban and remove shit server-side?

Well, there is claimable stuff (ranging from houses to chickensheds), and they just fixed one of the problems, where claimable stuff will be claimed for 24 hours instead of 12 hours (I'd rather see 48 hours myself), which means you need to log in once a day instead of twice, and yeah, the GM stuff is what were really waiting for now, as building claiming seems to be somewhat better now. (entering a building claimed by someone else will mark you as a thief and will give you a negative alignment).

Especially the GM being able to place/remove stuff would be nice to be able to undo any griefing. Still havent been able to make a chest so still need to check if you can claim those or not. Bags and crates only have an auto claim that only lasts a few minutes.

All claiming to do with guilds, or citywide stuff will be in the MMO, yeah.

2 others will be playing or have played already, CRX and a good friend of him (D.O.A. and i have played with them Before quite regularly)
Both are nice guys and i don't expect anything to happen to the assets while they're around.
 
I'm going to play on other servers.

Frankly I've no interest in playing around in a little Fragtard server that is effectively nothing more than a private playground.

I'll play at Fragtard when it's open to the public.

Yeah, we consciously chose for the playground setup to get into the game and awaiting the features we mentioned, true.

I hope the server can go public soon, should be interesting. Looks like we have the basics figured out anyway. And with 10 people now we should be able to offer each other some protection anyway.

If you're asuming they're keeping it closed because they want the privacy and want to play in a small group you're wrong.

They do want to play with more others but they can not provide a stable area if there's a bunch of griefing fucks joining, running around, stealing or breaking shit that u have been working on for more than 12 hours and leaving whenever they've done their thing.

No one has told you not to give the password to others so i don't see the problem, why didn't we have this bullshit with Space Engineers. Which in fact was a locked server as wel....

Anyway, the GM mode has been released for download just now so expect to see it public in a few....

Yep, GM mode patch just got released;
We have removed the shackles from your creativity! You can now officially use GM mode in Your Own worlds. List of GM Mode commands and an interactive items DB can be found on our site: https://lifeisfeudal.com/billing/gmcommands.php

Warning! GM commands are designed to override normal gameplay flow and may cause different issues in your world! Use them with caution and at your own risk!
Patch notes (ver. 0.2.0.0):

  • Fully implemented GM mode
  • You can observe players in your world via Esc -> Players menu. GMs can kick and ban players via that menu
  • Fixed Drying rack. For real. If it is still not working one of our team members will be fed to Boris http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO4m-bZ6NcY
  • Fixed a bug where you could start yielding even when in a knockdown or dead state. No more zombies! Realistic medieval FTW! :)
  • Dung is now properly consumed from your inventory while using it as a fertilizer

  • Added a few missing items and objects icons
  • Fixed/added Light Scale gauntlets/greaves crafting recipes
  • Fixed a few server and client side crashes

So I suppose we can get working on unpasswording the server now, but I guess that's up to produx as he's running the server, and he's not online atm. Also the exact server settings prob need some discussion. Personally I'd prefer a char wipe too so all can get started on equal footing as well, but again, in the end that's up to Produx.

That's not up to me only, it's up to everybody who is playing. I've just updated the server and was about to test the GM commands to see what all is possible and not.

I'm completely for the idea to open up the server if I deem the GM commands enough to keep our public playground somewhat "grief-free".

The only problem I see with making it public right away is the re-branding period we're in at the moment. For the moment we can't name the server Band of Others already since it will lead to no website related to us.

I'm also for the idea of wiping when we go public and to establish a new place for our own village/town. We should use the time tonight to find a suitable place on the map for our new village. In case the GM commands work properly we could also discuss if we want to use our "creativity" first to already create some sort of mini village to work from in case several people don't want to have the server wiped.

Anyways, enough to discuss about before we do any change on the server, so let's use this thread to follow up on this and get on the same page. I'm going to check the server now with the GM commands available and will let you know how it works.
Please also let me know if you're up for a GM status for when the server would go public, I won't be able to run it on my own if we lure other players in.

I think a GM can only force completion on a started building (so one of those X-signs that doesn't have all materials yet), and not plop buildings like its simcity. However he can insta remove stuff (buildings/items)

It might even be an idea though that once we can, we could even put some huts etc spread out throug the map for other players to 'discover' and use :)
