Lotus 79 Series

Seeing as a 49 thread has been made and there has actually been interest in the 79 beyond myself running it I figured I should make a thread as well.

This week was my first week with the car outside of the Week 13 Nordschleife shenanigans and probably my favorite open wheeler in iracing if not my favorite car now. It's quite fast just like the 49 but instead of miles of braking and tyres made of 3 ply toilet paper you get slicks and gobs of down force to whip through corners at insane speeds. Basically an F1 car without the insane complexities of the new McLaren F1 car.

It seems that the larger grid times are Thursdays at 0230 GMT (we had a full 32 car grid last week) and SOF races on the weekend appear to have split so it is not exactly a dead series, just not super active as people plan more to race at the times posted to get bigger grids.

As far as the racing goes, it was fairly clean on Thursday, I started from the pits just in case and there wasn't a ton of accidents other than one racing incident involving 3 cars going up the toe in very close proximity and the odd driver going for a spin in the slower corners.

The community themselves is super welcoming and provides tonnes of different setups from planted and grippy to loose and slidy. Guys will also chat you up and help you out and offer setups in practice sessions as well, I think I ended the week at Watkins with 4 different setups given to me.

So far I think it's Myself, Peeble and Chris S that are interested in running the series. I will likely be looking at Thursday 230 GMT races and maybe weekend SOF races after the holidays have calmed down as well I will be spending some time Mon-Wed (or basically whenever I have time) in practice sessions.

I have also even created a paint for the car in the hopes that maybe we can get some peeps from the L79 community on here.

The car is a blast, really. It's not difficult at all to drive (nothing like the Lotus 49). Lots of downforce, but not *too* much downforce. Fast, but not *too* fast. Just a load of fun.

I just purchased the car and will be joining you! Only have my C-license currently so it'll just be practice until I gain my B status. Looking forward to it!

Hooray the more the merrier! If you can get to a C 4.0 you can run the series and it will count towards your MPR for a B licence. The 79 is at Donington Park this week and I'll probably be doing some practice in it tonight. Check the iracing forum too, people post lap guides and setups galore there.

Beyond this I'd rather not talk about the race....

I almost killed Peeble on the first lap.

The last three days have been an absolute grind though. One step forward two steps back. If it wasn't someone else screwing me then it was me screwing me. I stayed jumping up and down in between 3.43 and 3.60 in the C license for two days. Racing pretty much all Skippy. Which was a bad idea but for some reason they're so damn addicting. I then started switching it up between Ruf Cup at the Ring and Spec Ford series at friggin Spa. Talk about a car and track mismatch. Like 3 minute friggin laptimes in that car! lol Needless to say it was alot of laps. I have a bruise on the side of my right foot from soooo much heel-and-toe. I see why some guys wear the little racing shoes.

Haha nice. I did my best to speed through the lower races, and by speed I mean just sit back and wait for people to crash. It worked well.

I am not a fan of open wheel, but strongly considering picking up the skippy, along with a few other cars this week when I finally buy Nurburgring. Everyone is touting the lotuses and I'm very intrigued.

They're lots of fun. The 79 offers a very different driving experience than any of the regular cars with its fast in fast out mentality. The skippy is probably the least like an open wheeler in the way that it has very little down force and can be fairly twitchy.

Just bought the Skippy and both nurburgring tracks. So.... Hosted session involving all three iron?

Whoo! We're gunna have a helluva turnout at the SOF races.

So my plan was to run the 79 practice on Tuesdays whenever I get home from work and then run the Thursday race for the 02:30GMT time slot, and maybe the morning sessions on the weekend as well if there is interest. That way it shouldn't interfere with the league stuff at all.

I will be running a short L79 practice today myself though as I won't be home till quite late on Tuesday.

If you add another car to it, I'd love to do some ring practice or somethin. Still don't have the 79.

I'm down for some 79 practice. I haven't gotten any all week yet.

It's at Montreal this week so that should at least be fairly fresh for us...
