I've noticed something lately. as I've been doign various home renovations, I've reorganized how my network is laid out. My computer now gets its internet connection via wifi, and it's a bit slower, so I've not been playing as much online lately. I'd also gotten tired of BF3 (the last FPS I was playing online with any regularity) around the time Armored Kill came out and ruined my favorite game mode (Rush). I went back briefly to try some of the new earthquake maps, and just wasn't that into it. Haven't been back since.
This past week, I tried downloading Red Orchestra 2 again and firing it up. I'd sworn off it previously because RO2 had one of the WORST unlock/ranking systems ever devised. I went back to it because I discovered they have "Classic" mode where all avatars and weapons are "stock" just like in the old RO.
Except, when I went back to it...it really just wasn't any fun. I've tried it for a few days this past week, and...yeah, just wasn't doing anything for me. I don't know the maps that well, and my ping is around 100-150, so I'm already at a bit of a disadvantage. I'm also woefully out of practice, so I tend to die a LOT. Not much fun, really.
This got me thinking -- maybe I'm just...done with competitive online FPS games. I far prefer collaborative ones like playing Halo in Co-op or L4D/L4D2 types of games. I suppose I could get back into TF2, but that's because that game's just so goofy and fun that it's hard to get too annoyed at it even when I'm sucking.
Really, though, I'm starting to realize that I'd rather play through an interesting story than mindlessly shoot guys. FPS games are fun when I have a regular group of folks to play with, but even then, you need the time to devote to playing to them and there are other things that just grab my attention. I still like single-player FPS games, but I've no desire to play against a bunch of caffeine-addled teenagers who have nothing but time on their hands.
