Thanks Johnny.

I have BF3 updating right now which is convenient I guess considering Battlelog will also be down for the next few hours.

To get close quarters do I need own premium? Or do I have to wait 2 weeks to be able to get it without?

Yep, either get Premium and get it onm the 12th or buy it standalone and get it 2 weeks later.

If you get premium you can already unlock the weapons now as the CQ achievements are already live.

Actually I think you get all the DLC's early with Premium as well as priority placement when waiting in queue for full servers.

The queues thing is bollocks, I can't believe EA would turn that into a money generator.

Seriously?

This is just the beginning on our road to paying to play online.

The gaming industry has been creating more revenue than the Motion Picture Industry, Prime Time Television and even Book Sales (in Europe apparently) for years. We still have yet to see but I'm betting it's on it's way:

  • Ingame advertisements and billboards valued at visibility.
  • Commercials during load screens.
  • Ads in Battlelog, Origin, etc.
  • Buyable customizations and weapon options (similar to Team Fortress 2).
  • Ingame Stores and credit systems such as Games for Windows Live.
...and God knows what else?

Games are a huge and pretty much, untapped market as far as earning potential goes. Companies like EA are at the forefront of those who know they can hold a little bit back and charge for it later as Premium Content.

All of the popular YouTuber's are going to purchase Premium and many of them hold 20,000 - 50,000+ Subscribers so how many of these people are going to pick it up based off the YouTuber's they follow?

I wouldn't be surprised to see a shared revenue system one day that rewards players for marketing a Developers Content.

The sky is the limit here and the only restriction is the close relation between imagination and greed at some of the larger game devs.

Most of that stuff only EA and Activistion have done though and we all know what they're like.

EA's mistake here is they're not really giving you anything. Its perceived value rather than something that cost them money to produce like DLC. When Turn 10 did the Forza Season Pass, you got a large discount on all DLC for 6 months, basically all of it. This BF3 gimic is just an afternoons work for an artist and some switches on a server been flicked.

If EA had done the same then I'd be up for it but in all seriousness (bare in mind I used to work for one of the largest Korean publishers who specialise in this stuff) this model is only going to work so much before they're going to have to go free to play/micro payment. Micro payments make allot more money than subscriptions but on the basis of free to play.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what happens as games get more and more sophisticated and take more and more resources to create. EA has a history of demonstrating their mindset toward keeping their mitts in our pockets and I'm worried that other devs will follow.

It happened to Television in North America and continues to happen until Cable TV is a thing of the past. In Canada, we're finally considering passing a law to make it illegal to have higher volume on TV Ads than on the TV Program itself.

A 30 minute sitcom has been whittled down to under 20 minutes now as the structure is now:
  • Extended Commercial break at every 30 minutes
  • Theme Song/Intro
  • Commercial Break
  • Program 10 - 12 minutes
  • Commercial Break
  • Program 10 - 12 minutes
  • Commercial Break
  • End Theme Song/Credits
  • Extended Commercial Break
This is the ridiculous basis of Prime Time Television in Canada on brought in from US Networks.

Non-satellite Radio is every bit as bad as Prime Time Television. I need at least 6 Radio Stations on my home receiver so I can flick between them in hopes of catching some actual music. It has gotten so bad in the past few years that I haven't listened to FM on my Home Stereo for probably 3 years now.

I'm convinced it will get this bad with Games maybe not now but I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the next 5 - 10 years.
