The queues thing is bollocks, I can't believe EA would turn that into a money generator.
Seriously?
This is just the beginning on our road to paying to play online.
The gaming industry has been creating more revenue than the Motion Picture Industry, Prime Time Television and even Book Sales (in Europe apparently) for years. We still have yet to see but I'm betting it's on it's way:
- Ingame advertisements and billboards valued at visibility.
- Commercials during load screens.
- Ads in Battlelog, Origin, etc.
- Buyable customizations and weapon options (similar to Team Fortress 2).
- Ingame Stores and credit systems such as Games for Windows Live.
...and God knows what else?
Games are a huge and pretty much, untapped market as far as earning potential goes. Companies like EA are at the forefront of those who know they can hold a little bit back and charge for it later as Premium Content.
All of the popular YouTuber's are going to purchase Premium and many of them hold 20,000 - 50,000+ Subscribers so how many of these people are going to pick it up based off the YouTuber's they follow?
I wouldn't be surprised to see a shared revenue system one day that rewards players for marketing a Developers Content.
The sky is the limit here and the only restriction is the close relation between imagination and greed at some of the larger game devs.
