Race replay - hectic!

On my mission to get a B class license, I had this race in the Mazda Advanced Cup series (bad idea) at Daytona. This track looks really good I think under the floodlights...

It was entertaining because of the incidents, and the close finish with my nemesis of that race. Despite the reputation of the Mazda races I had some respectful, close racing as you can see particularly around the 8:40 mark going two, three cars wide through corners. Great stuff.

Anyway, I was playing around with video editing and I'm trying to teach myself how to use it, so forgive the rawness of the video, but I think the actual capture quality and picture in picture effect came out quite well (although not up to the standard of Duke's videos etc.).

Hope you enjoy, was a lot of fun racing and making the video :)

I watched the first five minutes (I should be doing my homework) but my biggest pet peeve with these types of videos is when the top window isn't synced to the main video. It seems the TV1 camera you have is a bit ahead.

Other than that, it was good from what I watched. Will watch more later.

Yeah I noticed that too, must try harder ;) Any top tips from video makers would be gratefully received :)

I personally sync it up to when I cross the start/finish line the first lap, try and judge where it happens exactly, and match the two videos there. Then I jump 3/4s of the race ahead and check out if I cross the start / finish line at the same time again on both videos. If not, I adjust there again, then check the beginning again.

It's almost always a sound issue. Make sure that your bitrate is the same in both recordings and that your bitrate matches on the output video.

...actually I rescind what I said above because the issue appears to be more the fault of a studdery capture in the external view.

For this I found that creating custom cameras is the best especially if you narrow there FOV. Rendering large sections of track, smoke and other cars can make your framerates inconsistent and your capture choppy.

I also found that DXTory was horrible at capturing track views yet FRAPS does a much better job.

All of my YouTube Videos are captured live in car during the race with DXTory and the external cam view is always FRAPS.

Thanks for the tips guys, I just used Shadowplay, but I don't think I synced them up quite right. And I've just seen that I was rendering all the cars in the replay which isn't really necessary I suppose so can drop that down a bit. Fascinating stuff though, I can see why you like doing it :)

I'm not sure what is a good time re: rendering. This 27 minute video with picture in picture took just over an hour to render, is that normal or too slow?

It came out at just under 2gb as well, again, is that about right?

A 30 minute video for me takes about 4 hours to render but I'm capturing everything at 1080 at pretty high quality in both FRAPS and DXTory. The raw files are roughly around 60 GB each.

The output file for me comes in usually between 3 - 4 GB which is probably a slight bit of overkill.

An hour rendering seems about normal for me. Depends on your res and codec you are using. 2 GB sounds right as well. I like to use aftereffects, because I'm very familiar with all adobe programs and it is pretty useful for a lot of stuff, though it takes longer for me to piece a video together and is quite the memory hog.

I also enjoy adding some full external shots of the beginning of a race... just adds to the coolness from the beginning. Check out the start of this:

Ok that makes sense I think. Although my figures are slightly different.

- My raw files for each video were 17.3gb for external and 15.5 for internal view. - I rendered 8mbps HD 1080p @30fps .wmv
- I captured DSR x2 1080p @60fps 130bitrate (bitrate was the highest the slider would go, is that generally good practice?)

Both of your videos are what inspired me to have a go myself as they are of such a high standard (imo) and I really enjoy watching them :)

Enjoying this discussion about recording too, it can be hard to find reliable information about this without wading through pages of jargon. Good to hear tips from you both thankyou :)

Yeah it is annoying wading through the crap about codecs, and getting it set up. But once I got my setup streamlined it got easier to churn out videos. Before, when I used a few different programs to compress, it would take me multiple hours to get it ready just to the point of final compression.

Now if only I could do commentary while driving... I don't trust my machine to record while driving... not until I get a much better hard drive or SSD. My current hard drive is a major bottleneck.
