So I'm pretty sure I broke my pc.....

So i'm moving soon as some of you know, and in preparations I was taking my heat sink off to pack it separately so it wouldn't jingle around and snap off in transit. So i go to take it off and it's not budging, i tugged a little more (too much i guess) and the cpu chip came up with it. Guess the thermal paste had solidified. Anyway i put it back, let it heat up and got the two apart.

So I put the chip back in, turn the power on and screen is black.

So i figure either the chip got damaged, or the motherboard or both.

So i should just buy a new chip and motherboard correct? Someone tell me my logic is sound?

I'm not a happy camper right now, but the packing continues.

Can you take a picture of the socket and processor pins? You should be able to see if anything is damaged.

Yeah.....I put the chip back in, and just bubble wrapped everything, so I can't right now. The socket didn't look like it had any pins in it. I definitely think the lever is broken (amd chip locking lever) as it didn't feel like it moved it as much as it used too when locking the chip down. I could upload some pictures next week. Idk if the chip is damaged, i was just assuming it was based on the pc not starting up. Could maybe it just not be locking into place and the chip is fine?

Does it beep or do anything when you try to start it up?

It should do something so you need to describe exactly what happens when you turn the power on.

A black screen isn't enough information; it could even mean your monitor isn't plugged in lol.

i'm pretty sure it beeped. Fans started spinning, green light was on the mother board. And yes the monitor was plugged in. I can't really tell more until next week when i can plug it back in. So I should hold off on ordering replacement parts?

I would wait until you can give a detailed account of whats actually happening. Unless you can see obvious physical damage to the chipset or motherboard you may be throwing money away for no good reason.

You're moving to Seattle, think of all the great deals that can be had just a couple hours drive away in Hongcouver. Especially with a 83 cent Canadian dollar.

And besides, you can go visit doook and tell us how shrivelled his nuts are!

In all seriousness, just wait until your in Seattle and figure out what's going on. You got enough on your mind with the move, don't fret about the pc.

Upon further inspection i can see atleast 3 bent pins on the cpu.

Edit: got better lighting, looks more like closer to 10 pins.

So buy a new cpu, put it in and hope it turns on? If not then it's the mobo too?

EDIT EDIT: Some of the pins are really badly bent, like i can't ever get anything under them, also there are a ton, also I don't really have patience.

I had an FX-6300, Maybe i can get a better cpu for around the same price (100 bucks?) any suggestions?

That'll be your problem.

Get an X-acto Knife and get comfortable because fixing bent pins is brutal especially if there bent in more than one direction.

I had a full corner of pins bent on my last AMD (damaged in shipping) and it took me 4 hours and a lot of eye strain to fix them.

Rocky, I love you so, so much, but trying to take that heatsink off wasn't your smartest moment.

Yeah tm I was stressed with moving and I just didn't think. I just bought a new chip off newegg. Hopefully I put it in and it works.....

Got my new CPU, put it in and everything started up fine. Thank goodness it was just a chip. Also, pretty much set up in Seattle, DAMN superbowl loss though!

Glad to hear it was just an inexpensive CPU. Did you get the same model?

Hope everything is good in Seattle, one day during the nice months you'll have to do a swing through BC/Alberta and we can drink some beer together!

Yeah I just got another AMD-FX6300. Read some articles of more expensive chip sets for my socket but it didn't seem like the small performance boost was worth the money. I just googled Seattle to Edmonton directions.....you're very far away kitty....
