Hey gus! I saw this game "Soldner- Secret Wars" and it looks OMGMAZING!!! We should'nt just play it and have old Wolfclash style things on TeamSpeak, let's make a FANSITE for it!!

At least making the fansite for it was fun, I still remember we got an e-mail from someone in asia who wanted to order a hind from the site, lmao!

That was like the most over hyped game of my childhood...

I remember watching dev stuff for weeks then when I finally got it I played it once and was like "WTF" and never played it again...

There was also the "Il Mafioso" mod that we were doing that went nowhere...

There were definitely fun things about this game. The whole ZOLDNER thing on the main menu as tm pointed out. The voice commands which featured a man shouting ridiculous things at the top of his lungs. I remember creating some strings of those voice commands which produced some lols, especially when mixed with Duke's heyyyyyyyyyyyyyy trademark.

The actual gameplay made me want the bandwidth that I used to download the demo back though.

What amazes me about this whole thing, other than the fact that it seems that people are still playing and patching Soldner, is that someone apparently wrote a hilarious article about Soldner. 3 years ago.

Oh man, that brings back some nasty memories.

I remember there was a thing Wolfgaming did to try to promote Soldner, where they gave it away for free.

I downloaded my copy, tried it out, and messed around with it. It was atrocious. Barely a game at all. More just...space to run around and shoot guns. There were a bajillion different guns, but I had no idea whether they had any real practical differences for gameplay purposes.

Then I made the mistake of playing on one of the only servers out there. JESUS that was a bad idea. I don't remember what all the details were, but I think one of the guys in their game got all pissy with me because I was trying to figure out what the fuck to do to buy a basic gun or something, gave me shit about it, and I told him to go fuck himself or something equally courteous. He then proceeded to switch teams, buy a helicopter and baserape just me for the next 5 minutes that I bothered to provide him with a target. When none of the folks running the server did a damn thing to stop it, I just quit.

If that wasn't bad enough, though, he came to Wolf's forums and proceeded to bitch me out there, too, and got himself banned from the forums for it -- all before I even had a chance to look at his pissy comments.


So, not only was the game itself a total turd (OMG the flight physics alone were just absurd. I think Afterburner was more realistic.), but the community sucked ass too.

Really?? Solo that's just damn crazy. To just follow you to WOLF?? Geez...

Right on with the guns. I think I remember Vision saying that once you have a huge variety of weapons, then it doesn't matter since they are all ultimately so similar to each other. Seeing the weapons screen, it actually has a column to tell you the "Origin" of the weapon, so it seemed like it was trying to appeal to some gun nut national interest.

I remember playing the demo. Huge levels, but as I remember those 128 players we were promised at first were dropped down to 32 over time, meaning that encountering someone was rare. ANd then they had to be an enemy...

The game was really just overhyped, and ultimately couldn't deliver. I remember it looked really cool, and the whole making a fansite was obviously a "no risk no reward" matter. But I think late in the cycle it was clear it wasn't going to be the game changer that GiJoe imagined.

Of course I remember Söldner. When T.T.H. and I going somewhere by car and he wants me to have a look at the map, I still call out "MAP CHECK!" like in Söldner before getting the paper map out.
We also loved the commander mode.
"Darling, do you see the 3 huts to your left, just destroy the middle one with your bazooka."
"That grenade went to short..."
"He is coming to the wooden door in front of you. 3 - 2 - 1 - fire."
