Tabletop Games Anyone?

Anyone here play or played any tabletop games? Nothing is as nerdy, yet so very fun, as a good tabletop game. I've played a few in my day and was wondering if anyone else has.

My first tabletop game was Warhammer 40,000. What a great universe Games Workshop has created. If you've never heard of it... I'm sorry. It has a great history... starting back well in the 90's with the roots even before that I believe. One of, if not the best backstory and interesting lore I've ever read. The issue I've always had with it is that it's extremely expensive. Sure hobbies are money pits, but paying 40+ for 10 plastic figures, or 50-60 for a plastic tank is far beyond excessive. Not to mention rulebooks being on par with some of my college textbooks.

The series has some good video games but nothing spectacular... mostly RTS games like the Dawn of War series. They also made a 3rd person shooter called Space Marine but it was quite a bust. I thought it was fun but repetitive and unimaginative.

My more recent games I've been interested in is Battletech, with its video game series Mechwarrior. I'm sure most of you have at least heard of Mechwarrior, and it's most recent iteration, Mechwarrior online. MWO the game is pretty fun but it's your typical MOBA game, which never keeps me interested for long. Nonetheless, it's sim-type feel is appealing.

Back on topic, Battletech the board game is extremely fun and addicting. The strategy involved is beyond measure and when linked together in a grand campaign where you need to repair mechs and other war machines after battle it creates a very challenging game. Personally I've only ever played Battletech online, in a client that basically sets up a table and everything you need for you. Very fun!

As a kid, I loved WH40K. I amassed a sizeable Blood Angels Army and got as far into it as sending in some fan fiction to White Dwarf called "Foxhole 501".

I loved painting, making scenery, everything but the battles lol. I think in all the time I was into it I had maybe 3 battles round a friends house whose Dad was into it and had a dedicated table in his garage. They were pretty fun but for me it was more about the lore, I used to read a lot of the books, pore over the manuals and stats, draw, write. Loved it.

Pride of place on my shelf in my room was a company of Terminators diorama I made. Those buggers were tough, they survived everything, even my two younger siblings :icon_eek:

Space Crusade was what got me into the WH4oK universe, along with Adeptus Titanicus. A tabletop (or more like floor because of the space you needed) game based around the Epic series of games.

I've played every single WH40K game that came out, I did enjoy Space Marine, it was like a WH40K version of Gears of War, which is no bad thing. I actually enjoyed the multiplayer for a while, but none of my friends were into it so it got shelved unfortunately.

My favourite WH40K game is still Dawn of War, but not vanilla.

If you are into WH40K in any way, do yourself a favour and get this;

Best WH40K game I've ever experienced, and probably one of the best mods I've ever come across. Works seamlessly in multiplayer too, we have a blast dusting this off sometimes over a few drinks :)

I tried my hand at WH40K but never got in to actually playing on the board .
I found i enjoyed painting and reading the books and lore more then the actual game .
I have a nice collection of Black legion pieces and good assortment of books.

Also to those who are a fan of the warhammer and warhammer 40k worlds , there's some interesting (non table top) games in the works .
Have a look at Total war : Warhammer and Battlefleet Gothic : Armada .

Ps, LittleP , thanks for reminding about DoW, reinstalling as i type this ;) .

Thank you for the share DOA! I absolutely love total war games, and one in the 40k universe would be amazing. Let me know if you see any more updates. I am gonna try and keep a keen eye out for them both.

If there's one thing I love most about the 40k lore, it is their naval aspect. I think I mentioned in the massive Elite Dangerous thread I love capital ship spaceships... and almost none are bigger than 40k's behemoths. I can honestly say that 40k is probably where my love for them came. The few naval-focused books of 40k are my favorite as well. Aside from the Eisenhorn trilogy. What an amazing series that is.

But yeah Little P... for me I enjoyed the gaming more, but it was so difficult to find a friend who was actually into it (I wasn't really the most obviously nerdy type in school) or a chunk of time to play for 3-4 straight hours. Honestly the best bet would've been to just go to a games workshop store but the closest one was over a half an hour away (which is ridiculous considering I live in a major metro area)
