Team Fortress 2 Server

As some of you may already know, I've been setting up a Team Fortress 2 Server out of my home.

Last weekend, Johnny, Wapwap, my daughter and I managed to all hook up online and mess around ingame for a while. Wapwap and Johnny both experienced varying levels of lag so I need to stress test my network to see what kind of issues to expect.

For this I need help from you fine folks so if you're interested in helping me test this Server and get it up and running, please speak up.

We'll coordinate a time frame that works for as many people as possible.

BTW, we'll also be testing the Server with and without the addition of Bots.

Sure, i just need to download it, but that's a mather of minutes.
As i recall correctly SySto has TF2 aswell, i'll text him :)

Thanks guys, I think this is going to be a lot of fun just as a side distraction.

Depending on how it works, I've planned to possibly upgrade my Internet package to accommodate increased bandwidth and upload/download speed which I think should help if pings are too high, hopefully.

Also, if anyone has any idea on how to automatically get bots in each new map load then please let me know.

Currently I have to add bots between each map manually in tfserver as follows:
  1. sv_cheats 1
  2. nav_generate
  3. tf_bot_add #
  4. sv_cheats 0 (Important as it allows you to win items/achievements)
If I can add this either to a map config. or server config. so it happens on the fly, that would be great.

Dont know how the serverside scripting works, but i think it can be "coded" in, so you dont have to do that everytime a map loads...

Ya both of those are for Mann vs Machine so they don't really apply I don't think since we won't actually be running MvsM.

This is a straight Vanilla TF2 Server so everything should be a bit different.

I wish that would be pretty cool indeed.

I do know there is a way to create map.cfg files but haven't flushed it out that much. I'll have to look into it a bit closer to see if maybe that can be used when loading and executing map changes.

Try this in the server.cfg
Code:
// Bots //

tf_bot_difficulty 0 // difficulty
tf_bot_keep_class_after_death 1 // bots respawn as the same class every time
tf_bot_join_after_player 0 // bots start the round alone; 1 means bots only spawn when a player connects
tf_bot_quota 12 // Number of bots
tf_bot_quota_mode fill // fill = 1 bot disconnects when 1 player connects; normal = bots stay, so quota then should be lower than maxplayers

//Add certain bots (optional)

//tf_bot_add red 1 spy easy
//tf_bot_add blue 1 spy easy
//tf_bot_add blue 1 sniper easy

//Bots End//
This is translated from a German post I found; give it a try.

Note: I belive this only works for official maps as those have bot pathing.

I'll definitely give that a try because I'm sure it would work but the problem as far as I can see is that there is no mention of sv_cheats 0 and sv_cheats 1.

There's no mention of generating navigational points either so I have no idea how the bots will work or even if they will? Is that all there was included in that German Post, nothing relating to nav_generate?

The only reason I ask is that if you don't run nav_generate then the bots just stand there as they have no idea where they can move to.

Very good find though Johnny so I'll certainly add it to the server.cfg with a bot quota of 24 and normal difficulty.

I haven't looked into the Mann vs Machine Server yet because my understanding was that they were all Valve Servers which looks to be untrue.

I can look into MvsM if you all are interested but keep in mind that it's only a 6 Player Co-op and all slots have to be full in order to play.

Nope, played a few rounds with less then 6 people. It was a bit tough. I think it would be fun to mix it in, it's the new thing and all. :)

Apparently those have pathing, that article has more useful info as well, like a link to pregenerated meshes: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1264447

sv_cheats 1 only seems to be necessary if you want to control the bots from the console.
Nice, I'll have to look into it.

I'll have to pick your brain on how you did that because my daughter and I tried to join as two and couldn't get into a server.

The point being though that the maximum player count is 6 so anymore will have to sit in the lobby until the entire round is over will they not?

Hmmm, well it's rare I'm on a team of more then 5, sometimes just 4. We don't last long. And this is just going through the in-game menu search.

The bots are actually just there to keep you busy and believe me, they are tough.

Once players join they replace a bot so regardless of how many people are in the server, the action is always intense and dare a say, a sh1tl0ad of fun.
