Is it because vBulletin can really check what's being posted on the shoutbox? Like links/spam, etc..

It's not an integrated feature and the one best rule to keeping any site secure is to limit the 3rd party addons as much as humanly possible.

I don't mind using addons for a few things but the Chatbox is a database driven addon which means potential exploits that can harm our database; not just the site aesthetic.

The site gets damaged the chances are I can repair it, the database get's damaged and all is lost. I do have backups but with my horrid upload doing any large db copy/replacement is a complete nightmare. More often than not the process times out for me making this function literally impossible.
