That's the main problem. The users don't have an issue with using IE8, that coder have an issues to code for IE8...
Thats exactly it! Its a bane and a right pain in the ass but so many people still use it that it cannot be ignored.

For the good of mankind, please go to Windows Update and get IE9!

I've switched to Chrome but occasionally use IE9. My main gripe with Chrome is that I can't move thw swap/temp out of my SSD.

IE8 we still have to treat as a specific edge case because 18% of our customers still use it.
We just stopped supporting IE6 a year ago when one of our main customers/partners moved to.... IE7. Which we now have to support.

Thankfully our support is to the general public so we revise our browser support on a monthly basis. We dropped IE6 quite a while ago and IE7 has about 1.5% of our total users.

I think IE6/7/8 contingent is mostly people in corporate environments. You can see lunch time around the world...between 12 and 2pm IE usage spikes, then again just after 18:00pm.

I'm a Firefox fanboy.

I dislike IE for its incompatibilites (6, 7, 8, 9-in-quirksmode; only 9 in regular mode is ok), its totally horrible settings/options/properties, its "yes, spam me with all cookies you have" and its security related issues which don't get fixed in ages.

I dislike Chrome for the "Google wants your data and tracks you" issue. From a technical aspect I heard many good things about Chrome and Google puts a lot of money into its fast development.

I dislike Safari as I don't intend to use an Apple product, ever, because I hate the fact that Apple believes it knows what's the best for me. That and Quicktime on Windows was a Frankenstein piece of user experience for me.

I haven't tried Opera.

I haven't tried Chromium, the non-Google, open source variant of Chrome.

Reading over this again I think I'm not only a Firefox fanboy but even a grumpy old man...

In defense of Microsoft: IE 9 was in improvement and IE 10 will be another huge improvement regarding web standards and "not making it different than all the other kids just to be special". They're even collaborating with the other browser vendors and the open source community, e.x. regarding websockets I did read the "main development and standardization mailing list" and Microsoft representatives have been regularly posting there, even reporting which other browsers worked with the Microsoft websocket server implementation and which other server worked with the Microsoft websocket client implementation. It seems the engineers actually like to collaborate and meanwhile the executives even let them do so.

Nevertheless I don't expect Microsoft to improve their "internet settings" dialog or their "zone model" crap.
