Which steering wheel?

Hey guys I'm new here! For the past few months I've been wanting to get a good steering wheel but I'm not sure what to get. I want something with a real good feedback to it. I am not rich but I know you get what you pay for so I was hoping you could get somthing really good for about 300$ just for the wheel. I'd like it to be able to have 3 pedals, and have a nice shifter. I also may want it to be compatible with ps4 unless that forces me to have a garbage steering wheel. Also how most of you guys mount your wheels? Just to a table or do you have a seat or something? I love racing so I am willing to spend more but I bet there's a point of diminished returns for your money. One last question. Do lots of good racing games have VR compatability and does it improve the experience if so which VR is the one to go for?

Welcome shaun/sean ( you will have to let us know how to spell it )
you have many questions so I will try to get them best I can.

1) which wheel?
for $300 (US?) and that works with your ps4 and that has a shifter ( h pattern) I believe is a G29 by logitech , the shifter is an add on for $49 or so.
http://gaming.logitech.com/en-gb/product/g29-driving-force

most of us here play iRacing as it has the multiplayer aspect that cannot be beaten right now.

Some people play Assetto Corsa as well.

If the H Pattern shifter is not a dealbreaker then you also have the option of a Thrustmaster T300 doesnt come with an H Pattern shifter ( but you can get an aftermarket one as you can with any wheel )
http://www.thrustmaster.com/en_US/products/t300rs

Both of the wheels above come with paddle shifters on the wheel, which if you are playing iracing can be used in any car.

Both come with a pedal set which is fine to get going with but again, aftermarket pedals later on are always worth the upgrade.

you are kinda stuck with the wheel rim you get on the G29 , the t300 rs wheel rims can be swapped and there is quite a large range.

As far as diminishing returns on wheel sets? I don't think there are any, with racing hardware you get what you pay for. As you move up price wise though , the next step is Fanatec equipment https://www.fanatec.com/us-en/wheel-bases/csl-elite-wheel-base-usa.html which a lot of us use although I am unsure if they have PS4 compatibility. After this comes direct drive wheel sets which start at 4 figures and although very very good are a bit overkill to start off with.

if its $300 canadian?

Your last point about VR, iRacing, DiRT Rally, Assetto Corsa and Project Cars all have VR support in one form or another, to get the best experience from it though your PC needs to be THE SHIT as it is very hardware intensive.

HTC vive https://www.vive.com/ca/ and Occulus Rift https://www.oculus.com/ are the only two worth talking about, Occulus supports all of the games as far as I know and the Vive Supports them all but needs the (free) occulus software to run dirt rally and Assetto Corsa. The big two VR sets are around the same price and perfom just the same.

Both have built in microphones and some sort of headphones ( occulus has headphones attached VIve has a headphone socket) HTC has lenses that can be shifted forward so maybe more suitable if you wear glasses.

its pricey though so don't take my word for it, try it for yourself at a local best buy or a friends house, no description can do it justice nor any video, you need to see it for yourself. If anyone has any advice about one ask them first if they own one otherwise its just hearsay.

I think VR is totally worth it, others hate it or get motion sickness or it simply doesn't suit them because you are quite cut off the outside environment.

hope this helps, pretty much anyone here can help you get started with iRacing and one of us is probably playing at any given time of day, the other titles pretty much explain themselves.

See you on track!

So all I did yesterday was watch youtube reviews.. and just like you said it narrowed it down to the g29, or the t300. After reading comments it was pretty favorable if you wanted to cheap out to go for the g29, but it was easily worth the extra to go for the thrustmaster. So just now I went to best buy and got the Ferrari Alcantara t300 with the nicer wheel, and pedals, and found the H shifter you spoke about all in for 800$ a bit more then I wanted too and I don't even have a seat, stand or VR yet.. I hope I can use it on my computer desk for now and be happy with it as is for a while.. I have a wedding I'm supposed to be saving for..lol Its spelled Shaun btw. Thanks for your input it made me pull the trigger. My computer should be able to handle anything.. I think the weakest link is the 8gb graphics card. So next is VR setup if I'm happy sitting at the computer deck

I think you will really like the Thrustmaster. I have used one for over a year and for the price, it is a great wheel. No real quality issues, easy to integrate with iRacing and pretty easy to catch slides. I like it so much I have been waiting for tge Thrustmaster DD to come out as I would think that will also be a quality product for a decent price. I've said before, the pedals suck, but there are lots of options to upgrade, but the wheel is great!

Welcome to Band of Others :)

A few of us have VR (I have the Vive personally, others are split between Vive and Rift HMD's) and we have different specs so if you post yours we should be able to give you an idea of what level of performance you're likely to get from VR.

I myself have a fanatec clubsport handbrake and a G29 with H shifter. I'm more than happy with it, but I'm not as hardcore as some of the guys and girls here when it comes to the sim racing. I dabble in iRacing but mainly play Assetto Corsa and Dirt Rally at the moment.

One thing I will say is I wish the G29 had a bigger steering wheel, but I'm 6'2" and 130kg so pretty much any peripheral feels like a childs toy to me o_O

Good to have you with us, see you on track

the more ram you can throw at your PC the better, 16 gb is good, 32 gb is even better ( i am guessing you have windows 10? No clue about current ATI graphics card tech but if it is at least as good as a GTX 1060 then you should be good to go, sorry cant be much more help with that. The processor is more than good enough.

Mine runs it fine with 16 gb Ram, i7 6700k, Titan pascal, had a gtx 980 ti before which was also pretty good but as low as I think you can go before you get performance issues.

my stuff is running an HTC Vive btw, not sure if the rift has different requirements so might be worth checking that out if you haven't decided which VR to go with yet.

perhaps someone else in here uses the rift and can help out.
