I've posted my thoughts of Doom 3 BFG Edition on our Blog and had originally intended to give the reader some details into my experience with Doom 3. Unfortunately that became too lofty a goal as it's a story in itself which I've put in the forum instead.

This may come as a shock to some of you but Doom 3 was my first experience into the world of Doom. What originally got me interested in the world of Doom was Return to Castle Wolfenstein which to this day remains one of my overall all time favorite games. RTCW had it all, great gameplay, good visuals, it ran well and surprisingly was an emotional roller coaster for me.
I'm the type of gamer who likes to survey the situation and then play accordingly and this type of gameplay was very much rewarded in RTCW. The reward wasn't so much level success as it was atmosphere. To this day I can still here these German Soldiers banter complaining about everything from fixing constant recurring leaks in the damn to stealing someone else's tools.
The humor was a major surprise for me and much of what I loved about RTCW but what really stood out for me was the Catacombs. Never before had I been so completely terrorized by a game. I don't know if it's because I play in 5.1 at night but those bl00dy Catacombs scared the living crap out of me.
Then I started reading interviews by Carmack stating that "Doom 3's only focus would be on scaring the shit out of the player in Single Player Mode". Reading that from Carmack had me instantly hooked and I salivated over Doom 3 until release.
...and what a release! Doom 3 played for me out of the box without issue and was fluid, visually stunning and oh ya, scarier than hell.
Doom 3 is responsible for breaking my computer desk. There was one particular instance shortly after the mirror scene where you have to simply walk down a long mostly straight hallway. Half way down this hallway was a cutout with floor lighting that was broken by some containers stacked in front of it; a perfect monster lurk spot if I ever saw one.
I was so intent on not letting something jump out from behind the containers that all my attention was focused there. What I failed to notice was that the hallway had fallen to my peripheral and it was just enough for an imp to get the jump on me.
The scare was so abrupt that I jumped to my feet knocking my computer chair 2 or 3 feet behind me. In doing so, I ripped the keyboard drawer from my computer desk. The keyboard and mouse went flying and landed hard on the ground, hard enough for half off the keyboard keys to fly off the keyboard.
Where the keyboard drawer had ripped from my desk, all the screws had taken wood with them and could not hold the keyboard drawer anymore. It took hours and some heavy modifying to save that part of my computer desk and it's still a bit loose to this day.
Suffice to say, after that I was completely screwed mentally so it took me a while and a number of attempts to complete Doom 3. In fact, some of my gaming sessions lasted less than 15 minutes because I was just too shaken to continue.
To this day my daughter and I laugh about it sometimes because she would goat me into playing it and sit watching from the couch in horror as I played terrified at what may come lol.
If Doom 4 has even a portion of this atmosphere I'll likely die of a heart attack.
