I was talking to someone about Windows 10 and they weren't too happy with it so far. I can't remember who this was though, maybe Kevin Hill?

It could have been lack of Driver support iirc which isn't surprising but he said some games weren't giving him half the frames Windows 8.1 does.

One thing I heard is that you are always stuck with the latest release. IE you're forced into updating your windows to the newest release of 10. So stable or not stable, you have to update.

The last one I talked to with windows 10 could barely get half of his games to work anyway and regretted going 10 immensly. I'll be on 8.1 for a whole while longer.... untill the M$ guys force me I guess...

I'm still content with Windows 7. I'll wait until I have to upgrade before I do, maybe when I build a new PC in a couple years.

The constant updates thing is absolutely ridiculous. How long until you think someone creates a program that blocks them? Honestly I can see that happened very quickly.

Only way to get around this is to buy the business or enterprise edition. Business edition of Windows 10 allows you to delay updates for up to 8 months, and Enterprise edition allows you to basically ignore all updates if you want.

Microsoft has completely acknowledged that with this, they've made home users literally their beta testers for businesses using the better editions. Ridiculous.

At the very least, I've read you can downgrade back to the Windows version you had. Not sure if that is always or within a year of upgrading.

I gather the free upgrade is available for a year, so I'm giving them time to shake out some of the initial bugs. Just like the old adage was "never buy an MS operating system until the first service pack is released," I'll be waiting maybe 6 months or so.

I installed Windows 10 on 3 machines yesterday without any issues bar the known Nvidia driver conflict which is easily sorted. Everything worked. One was 7 and missing a few years worth of updates, another was 8.1 standard and the other 8.1 pro.

10 is just 8.1 with some tweaks so there isn't too much to worry about. The UI changes are completely optional as well. Even my old start8 worked as I did a keep all apps and files install on my gaming machine. The only thing I had to do was reset my default browser. Other than that I've had more hassle updating to a new service pack.

What's the Nvidia driver issue Mondo? I'm unsure whether to upgrade or not. If I do I'd like to do a completely clean install I think.

The Windows update will try to installer a driver over a newer one. Aparently it's Nvidias fault. Doesn't take much to fix though.

When you update you get the option like you did with 8 over 7 of doing a fresh install with nothing kept. It dumps everyone in windows.old folder. I usually do this but I recently reinstalled anyway I did the "keep all the stuff" option and it worked really well. Ran the system files cleaner afterwards and the old windows version is dead, since I don't need to revert.

Upgraded 4 PCs with Windows 10 now and had no issues at all. Works perfectly. I was slightly worried when doing it to my new Dell XPS laptop but it turned out without a problem. Even my CH HOTAS works and the drivers are not signed for 10. Two of the machines I upgraded were 7>8>8.1>10 upgrades in series so if something could go wrong it would have been with those.

The only confusion I had over the whole thing was the Nvidia problem and my mobo driver for the Intel onboard GFX chip which I used for a third screen. The driver didn't install, so disabled the device, removed the driver, enabled and then windows update sorted out the new version.

Until games are programmed using dx12, I don't think there's going to be a major difference. I've asked in multiple places, including on the iRacing forums, to see if there would be ANY advantages at all in using dx12 and a staff member replied, saying unless the game is programmed using that version's API, there is no benefit.

Does having a higher DirectX version (DirectX 12, or even 11 in iRacing's case at the moment) provide any benefits, or do games need to be coded with the DirectX version in mind to take advantage of some (or all) of the higher version's features?

To take advantage of the DX11/DX12 features of the GPU we would have to code to those those programming interfaces. You wouldn't see any visual differences.

EDIT: I speak only the DirectX version change. Obviously not to any OS performance enhancements.

I personally don't see any reason right now not to upgrade. We're not talking about the XP to Vista transition here, but a very stable OS to an upgraded version of that with some fairly nice UI features for once.

If a certain game or peripheral is known not to work then that is the only reason I'd hold back.

Here are some gaming benchmark comparisons between 8/10.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/windows-8-1-vs-10-graphics-performance-review,1.html

Aside from the usual small hiccups we cannot detect anything improved or for that matter worrying. Windows 10 is marginally faster overall for both cards, but again driver changes and random anomalies can easily account for that.

I'm on 10, haven't had any issues and I'm really enjoying the better multi-monitor support. I did a full wipe though.

I'm on W10 now on my older alienware m14x r2 from 2012 and my main pc.

Had no issues whatsoever on my main pc but I had to fiddle around quite some to get some proper chipset and sata drivers running on the alienware.
