It only gets worse.
I know what happened, now is the why.
Jarred from a sound sleep to unrecognizable surroundings, panicked.
At this age the fog takes longer to lift.
Need to push past it, come back to the world.
C’mon old man, shake it off!
In a rush it all comes back through soft snores of his loving wife.
He is home, they are safe, they survive.
Panic replaced by shame. Washing over him now with the realization he drifted off.
This is occupation, dozing is dangerous particularly at night.
Listening now, the only sound the rain outside.
He rises slowly to make the rounds.
His wife stirs.
